Commercial Description:
This beer is a rare 'Sticke Alt' originating from Düsseldorf. 'Sticke', or 'secret', means the brewery does not reveal its recipe. It is an ale but is fermented at colder temperatures like a lager. It is more intense than a regular altbier. The brew is full-bodied and well-hopped, with a great balance between bitterness and nutty-malty sweetness, overlaid by strong notes of caramel and roasted malts. It is dark-copper in color, has the flavor complexity of an ale, the noble hop bouquet and creamy head of a Pils, and the clean, mellow-smooth finish of an Oktoberfest.
Tasted 6/7/08. Draft at the St. Louis Microfest. Dark brown hue with a spotty beige head. Cola and cocoa notes. Bready aromas. Medium bodied with a nice bitterness. Nice tart and peppery. Solid!
Tap at the Brewpub. Color was a deep brown/orange. Nose was all malt and nuts. Taste was clean and lager-like, not really super hoppy. Decent but nothing spectacular.
STL Microfest. Pours dark brown with a tan head. The aroma has bready sourdough, caramel and dark creamy malt. Medium body with lots of carbonation. The flavor starts out very dry with caramel notes and bitterness that seems to come more from the malt than hops. The finish is drier and lightly puckering. An okay beer.
