COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A beer style perhaps lost in antiquity, our rye wine closely resembles an English-style barley wine but with a spicy/peppery note from rye, this beer is dark copper in color with a full body, high residual malty sweetness, high complexity of alcohols and fruity-ester characters balanced by low bitterness and extraordinary alcohol content, some English-variety hop aroma and flavor is present, and caramel, dark toffee and vinous/sherry-like aromas and flavors dominate. Drink it now or let it age.

Good, robust and malty like a barleywine should be. The ABV matches all the best. Good overall.

A solid barleywine packs a strong punch. Big, bold, and brash it is an interesting release that I wish I could try side by side with a soured version. I suspect that it would do some fun things despite the fact that the original is already phenomenal.

Aroma / Appearance - A caramel hue sticks to the glass like melted toffee. Thin white head rests on the top like wispy clouds. Vanilla, caramel, heavy malts, and melted candy bars drizzled over fresh warm cheesecake give it lots of depth. The alcohol is evident though far from unbalanced as with some high gravity beers.

Flavor / Palate - Malt, creamy caramel, and chewy textures taste like a melted Twix bar oozing over the tongue. Full bodied and tangy it has a crisp sharp note that shines before the rye takes over. A hoppy finish pleases the palate. The only real ’flaw’ if there is one may be the price. A little too expensive for more than special occasions, it is still worth seeking out if you are in the mood for a Midwestern gem.

On tap @ Destihl. Pours a nice copper color with khaki foam. Plenty of caramel, vanilla, and toffee aromas. Hints of oak and spice. Some golden raisin, mild cocoa powder, and sweet chocolate. There’s a lot of malt character and sweetness to the flavor. Caramel and toffee dominate. Subtle oak and vanilla. Background chocolate and fruit flavors. Nice beer.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery. Pours a clear amber with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice rye note with some sweetness and a bit of bitter grain. Flavor has bitter grains with a nice rye note and a bit of toffee.

On tap at Avery Strong Ale Fest poured a clear reddish amber with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of rye, oak and caramel. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of rye, caramel and oak with a crisp dry lingering oaky rye finish.

On tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest 2014. Pours a fairly clear, dark orange appearance with a thin tan head. Booze is awfully strong in the nose and flavor. A lot of retronasal burn. Caramel and dough. Some spice and a touch of banana / apple / raisins. Plenty of rye. Not my thing.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a fairly transparent caramel with thin light beige lacing. Smells solid; a sweet but not cloying backbone with notes of caramel, toffee, and rye spice. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. I’ve grown away from barleywines over the past couple of years, but this is an enjoyable one.

Tap. Dark brown pour, no head, spicy malt aroma. Good sweet caramel malt, hints of spicy white pepper, and surprisingly smooth for the high ABV. Decent beer, but a little pricey (at least at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul).

Draft at Happy Gnome. Dark amber with a slight tan head. Hoppy, big and malty and surprisingly drinkable for 11%. Would love to try the variants of this one!
