4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rather like a thick, hoppy porter. Chocolate-heavy nose, green plant aroma, hop oil and hefty malt flavor. It was the best thing on the menu at the time - surprising that itís rockiní a sub-3 average...

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled at Destihl. It poured a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of Amarillo hops, some peach and tangerine with a hint of roastiness. The taste was of bitterness, from the hops and some grain bitterness. Very good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 6, 2013 Sample sized glass at the brewpub in Normal Pour was black with a tan head. Nopse of citrus and roasted malts. Medium in body. Flavor is full of hops and the finish is bitter. Nails this style perfectly. Very nice tasting beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled at Destihl Normal. Clear black with red. A beige head. The blavk part is both tasted and smelled. It is anise but also spicy. A nice hop bite leaves a long after taste. Quite nice and it is a style I donít care for a lot.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap - good size tan foamy head, very black color, citrus hop and roasty aroma and flavor, kind of surprised with the roasted malt notes but still good

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Ruby brown pour with a sticky, foamy head that disappears quickly. Had a 4oz draft of this from the source. Not a lot on the nose but a fairly nice offering of flavor, a pretty decent black IPA with a healthy dose of both hops and malt.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at GTMW 2012. Ruby brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, mild citrus and mild coffee. Taste is more black than IPA with roasted malt, mild tannins, light citrus and low bitterness.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at DeStihl. Deep black body, lasting beige head. A relatively mild, doughy interpretation. Still has that thick peppermint patty flavor, minty. Subdued carbonation. Quite fresh, a nice straightforward beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap @ the brewpub in Champaign. Very dark brown, creamy tan head that leaves sheets of lace. This almost looks nitro but itís not. Very roasty aroma, with background hops. In a blind tasting I wouldnít guess this to be a black IPA by the nose. The palate is well hopped however, mostly conifer and citrus pith with a nice roasty malt base. Balanced, enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled on tap at the brewpub (Normal, IL). Pours a blackish brown hue, a darker brown edges that show some glow and clearness, frothy tan head dies to a film, laces well. Aromas are roasty and cocoa, dry florals and some faint grapefruit, florals, and some biscuits. A decent hopping grows on the nose. Initial is a medium bodied offering a healthy bitter hopping up front, dry florals and grapefruit mix, essence of pine, moving into some toasty and roasty malts, some cocoa, biscuit sweetness. Into the middle, the bitterness and hop essence grows, remaining good and dry, bitter citrusy and earthy florals and piney hops. Touches of toast and roast, some mellow sweeter malts, nothing getting into that Black Patent area. Finish throws good bitterness, cocoa, lingering solid dryness. Very nice, lighter and drinkable. Really nice.
