Sampled from the tap at the 2010 GTMW. Poured a near clear amber red with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was extremely pine filled but still a bit of caramel and a hint of light fruit. Flavor was similar with extreme pine bitterness but mellows with a bit of caramel and fruit in the finish.

Small, dense, off-white head tops a beautiful red clean bodied beer. Aroma has a mild citrus nose, a modest amount of toasted malt presence and some caramel hints at the end. Flavor has a strong bitter hops presence overall with notes of pine early, very sweet caramel malt presnce in the middle and some toasted notes, strong citrus at the ending with a nice Marris Otter type of toasted note. Body is very heavy, sugary, rich texture, no alcohol is noticeable for such a hefty brew. Overall very tasty. Definitely a solid brew with a great hopiness that compliments the strong body and sweetness.

On tap at the brand new brewpub in Champaign, part of a large tasting flight that I wasn’t even charged for! Hazy dark orange, thick head that laces even the small sample glass. Aroma of blood oranges and toffee. Heaps of citrus and stone fruit hops on the palate, very fresh! Oily body, Long bitter finish with mild vegetal undertones. Really delicious.

Draft at Destihl. Pours a deep copper with a sticky offwhite head. Nose is full of citrusy hops. Some spicy notes as well. Caramel and fruity esters come through, lending a sort of watermelon note, oddly enough. On taste, it is definitely bitter, 85 IBUs per the website. Full bodied and a bit astringent. The maltiness works well to balance the bitterness that permeates. A nice respite from the other poorly cared for beers that are on the menu. Solid.

[Tap] Pours a deep ruby red color with a frothy beige head. Very nice lacing as well. Nose is of pine needles and grapefruit. The taste is also heavily hopped with citrus, floral hops, biscuits, sticky caramel and pine. The alcohol burn is very controlled and well balanced in relation to the other aspects within this beer. Very nice palate and low carbonation level adds to the stickiness here. Lingering dry and bitter finish. This was the best beer out of an otherwise pedestrian flight of ’premium’ Destihl beers.

On tap at the brewpub (Bloomington, IL). Pours a glowing brownish dark amber, nice offwhite head dies to a clinging film, light lacing. Aromas are caramel and toffee, a decent malty sweet bite and a touch toasty with grapefruit and florals pairing in the hop department. Initial is soapy, bigger, with caramel and toffee shining through, a touch toasty, biscuits, florals and lemon hops on dispaly for bitterness. Florals and faint pine, grass, lemon takes over for grapefruit, bitter finish for a bigger beer does linger quite well. This grew on me (as the sampler glasses are quite big here!). Nice Imperial Red, malty and hops really strike a balance, but still take over at times. Yum.

Preferred this on the cask to standard draft. Nice piney american hop profile on the nose. Has a great ruby color, with a white foamy head. Alcohol is well hidden, the flavor is dominated by the hops, with a caramel malt backbone to add some balancing sweetness.
