Extra special bitter possesses medium-strong English-hop qualities in aroma, flavor, and bitterness. The residual malt and defining sweetness of this richly flavored, full-bodied bitter is more pronounced than in other bitters. It is copper colored with fruity-ester character in aroma and flavor.

On tap.
Pours a slightly cloudy copper color with creamy foamy head. Aroma is caramel and lightly toasted grain with mild fruity esthers. Flavor is caramel-y yet dry and lightly nutty with medium hop bitterness of subdued intensity. A very light touch of citrusy-sour shows as well. A little drier than I had expected, which seems to be a recurring theme with this establishment’s beers. Medium to thick palate. I just can’t get excited about this style unless some brewery finds a way to uniquely highlight some of its characteristics. I haven’t encountered many that can, and that goes for this place too.

Arrived a deep red-copper color with zero head and very low carbonation and a light haze to it. Aroma began with a very faint floral hops presence, light toasted malt and finishes with some caramel sweetness. Flavor had a strong orange citrus hops up front which fades a mild caramel sweetness, some mild toasted middle and finishes with a solid bitter hop leaf flavor. Body is heavy and with almost no carbonation, creates an oily texture. Overall a decent ESB but a touch more carbonation wouldn’t hurt to help out the nose and body as it felt a bit on the heavy side.
