COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An Our mission for this Imperial or ’Double’ India Pale Ale is to overload the beer with hops for an intense hop bitterness, flavor and aroma while still being balanced by a big malt profile, resulting in a hoppy beer with more dimension. This beer is light copper in color with some hop haze from overloading with dry hops as well. World Beer Championships Award: Bronze Medal 2011

Can from Whole Foods. Pours deep copper with 2-finger off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, spicy hops, florals. Tastes caramel malty, somewhat astringent, with a huge IBU load, and spicy florals at the finish, albeit somewhat cloying.

This is a pretty glowing orange color w/ a long-lasting white head. It has a fairly fresh hoppy nose w/ pine, mango and melon in the nose. It is sweet and sticky w/ resinous bitterness but enough carbonation to lighten it a bit. This sweetness does serve to bring out some more tropical fruit character from the hops but it is a bit too much for my tastes. If you are into big, heavy IIPAs, this will surely scratch the itch for you.

Can during RBSG 2014 Grand Tasting at Schlafly Tap Room. Golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of pine, citrus, floral notes. Tastes of floral notes, pine, citrus. Medium body with a dry finish.

Nephilium (1311) - Ohio, USA - JUL 1, 2014
Nice start with a big pine aroma, pours a clear dark amber with a thin white head. The flavor is a bit tilted to the caramel malt flavors, with the hops coming out in the finish. Unfortunately, the hop aroma doesn’t get followed up on in the flavor; meanwhile, the alcohol is well hidden, and this is a very drinkable beer.

Can: The aroma consists of moderate caramel and lighter citrus hops. It pours a transparent copper with a two finger off-white head that fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is good amount of sticky webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate caramel with some light fruity notes. The finish has some citrus hops and pine that struggle to match the caramel malt. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Overall, on a hedonistic scale, this isn’t a bad beer, but this is a bad IIPA. Caramel should not be the dominant flavor and aroma in an IIPA. If I rated this to style, it would be in the low 2s.

12 oz can pours a crystal clear copper with a medium fizzy head and trace lacing. Aromas of caramel malts and hops. Bitter flavor with a slight sweetness in the finish. Not too bad.

12 oz. can pours a hazy orange amber with a small lingering off-white head and some lacing. Aroma is full of citrus and piney hops with lots of caramel. Flavor is the same. Taste is very sweet for a double IPA, with some bitterness in the finish. Body is medium to full with a sticky mouthfeel. Carbonation is less than average. Still, this one is a heavy hitter at 9.6% and quite enjoyable. I will try this again when I get the chance.

Can poured a hazy amber with a lingering ring of amber foam. Aromas of straw, grassiness, earthiness, lemon zest and light grapefruit. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, earthiness, lemon zest and light grapefruit with a crisp dry lingering bitter citrus finish.

Can @ Destihl. A little on the dark side of amber. White foam. Heavy on the caramel aroma. Fairly sweet hop profile as well--lots of orange and tangerine. Some pine and grass, too. Lots of toasted bread. Flavor is a bit sweeter than I like. A lot of caramel and toasted malt. Tangerine juice, orange peel, and some light pine bitterness. Slight grassy herb note. Good, just sweet.

Tasted at RBSG grand tasting. 12oz can. Hazy orange amber color. Thin off-white head, good bits of lace. Good earthy hop, pine in the nose. Nice bigger hop flavor. Bigger body. Very smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Good biscuity malt character, kind of toasty. Great, balanced DIPA.
