Draft pour on tap at Destihl’s 1st Barrel and Firkin Fest (Normal, IL). Pours a straight straw golden blend, gentle haze, some orange glow on the edges and bottom. A big cakey offwhite head atop, cakes well, laces really well. Nice. Aromas are a bit earthy and bitter, gentle dry straw, bready malts, kiss of apple, pear, and citrus. Grassy and earthy hops, gentle fruit elements, a touch of spice. Initial is fruity, apple and pear, red apple, straw, bready mellow malts. A bit cereal, a touch tart moving into a more apple, mellow grainy middle. Touches of spice, dry earthy hops into the backend and finish are earthy, a kiss of citrus, gentle spice. That mellow fruity front and middle give the Kolsch feel but gets a bit bitter into the backend and finish. Pretty drinkable, a touch of tart apple, fruity elements. Nice, different. Summer sipper with a tart fruit bent. Dry finish.
