‘California Common’ beer is a hybrid style of beer brewed with lager yeast but at ale fermentation temperatures. This truly American beer style was first developed during the California Gold Rush when cold fermentation for lager yeast was not readily available due to lack of refrigeration, resulting in a highly effervescent beer. It is amber in color and medium bodied with a noticeable degree of caramel-type malt character in flavor and in aroma. Hop bitterness impression is medium-high and is balanced with a medium-low degree of fruity esters, hop flavor and aroma and malt character to give an impression of balance and easy drinkability. Alcohol by Weight (Volume): 3.9% (5.0%) Bitterness (IBU): 43 Color SRM (EBC): 11 (22)

[Tap] Clear amber pour with very little head but a nice ring of foam clinging to the glass. Sweet caramels and herbal hops in the nose. Balanced malt/hop flavor. Hints of herbal hops, light vegetal notes, sweet grains and faint grass. Not a huge fan of this one, but no major flaws here. Tasting notes from 9/2014.

A solid California Common style draft was my last before heading back onto the road for Madison. A beer that feels as if it could be polarizing due to its simplicity, this retains the hallmarks of a lighter session beer but with more flavor. If forced to choose I may go with the berliner weisse or whatever sour is on draft but this is not a terrible failsafe.

Aroma / Appearance - A coppery base sticks to the walls of the glass like sheets of rain. A sawdust tinted head adds some contrast to the eggshell head. Polished pennies, light wheat, and generous malts meld into a smooth texture that smells like gingerbread cookies cooling on a ledge.

Flavor / Palate - Sweet honey, malts, caramel corn, and more are smooth as they traverse the palate. A bitter tang in the finish is a bit like licking newly minted pennies. An oaky finish adds a mild bite. Put together into a complete package this makes an ideal transition for going from lighter sours to the more heavy entries in the draft lineup.

Sampler pour on tap at the brewpub (Bloomington, IL). Pours a deep copper orange hue, faint haziness with deeper glow, frothy offwhite head is a firm layer, sticks around fairly well as a pleasant filmy ring, laces well. Aromas are a bit fruity, touches of orange, bready and biscuity malts meet a gentle yeastiness, earth, gentle fruit melds with a touch of nuttiness, earthy hops. Initial is lighter end of the fold, touches of biscuit, gentle carmelized element meets a gentle dry hop element. Touches of earth, gentle toast and touches of fruit. A bit dry, earthy as we round the corner with a touch of yeastiness. Mellow toast and biscuit meet some gentle faint vanilla and carmelized nutty feel. Backend is dry, a bit spicy and earthy hops. A touch sweet, slightly darker with decent earthy hops. Solid.

On tap @ Destihl. Light amber colored beer. Some white foam. Interesting nose. Slight cocoa powder at first, but mostly toasted bread and toffee. Hint of apple, biscuit dough, and earthy, grassy hops. More bitter than I’d expect for the style. Heavy on the earth and grass hop notes. Sweet bread and toasted malts. A light herbal character. Some fruity esters as it warms.

Draft in Normal. Pours a turbid amber with a thin tan head. Nose is minty, isopropyl, caramel and earth. Low malt and moderate hops. On tasting, sharp bitterness with a leafy and flinty note. Earth and low alcohol. Light sweetness into a very dry finish. Clean overall but id clean up the bitter notes some to even this out. Also, needs to crash more or a step mash to clarify. Nice stuff.

On tap at champaign brewpub. Pours reddish clear amber with no head. Fairly hop forward with some slight roaster spiced malt character. Noting special but definitely not offensive. Decent session beer especially if you prefer yours on the hoppy side.

Wildly malty with an earthy, dark, bitter hop backbone. America, fuck yeah! Nothing much at this brewery impressed me.
