3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft on tap at World of Beer Naperville Destihl Event (Naperville, IL). Glad to finally try this one. Pours. A deep blackish hue, a firm opaque body shows just touches of ruby and brown glow on the edges and bottom. Cakey brownish head atop is sizable, sticks around well and laces very well. Nice presence and lasting effects. Aromas present deeper cocoa and gentle toasty malts meet a firm hop presence, florals and gentle citrus, a bit of resiny pine, more cocoa, light roastiness. Richer nose, firmer pine and bakers chocolate elements, dry and bitter. Initial is medium bodied, a firm hopping meets the palate up front, some florals, gentle grapefruit rind. A decent dose of pine starts to grow. Some toasty malts, a firmer black malt and some gentle cocoa elements. Some nicer citrus rind, earth, soil, peanuts at times. Middle shows more of this, grapefruit and citrus elements come in jabs, the peanuts, earth, toast, and mellow toffee and rye come at others. More dry and bitter than malt driven, the dryness and citrusy grapefruit juice work fairly well, provide a bit of a clash. Backend is firmer dryness, good bitterness that kicks but doesn’t overwhelm. A firmer body beneath provides some drama, some nice clashes of elements at times. Firmer bitterness is floral, citrusy, a bit soapy at times. Pretty solid beer, offering a firm hopping, decent freshness, nice clash of elements at times. The rye is mellow, mixing in more, perhaps giving it a touch more malty character as opposed to the standard Black IPA (a beer I enjoy pretty well). Nice stuff here. Nose and appearance are fantastic. A touch more hoppy life into the beer might elevate it for me on my own scale, but the rye shows some life, and I think they really hit the mark here for what they were after.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Destihl. Pours a deep brown, nearly black with a tannish head. Nose is a bit muddled. Hop resin, toast, faint butterscotch, caramel and a graininess. An old hop character funk as well. On tasting, moderate butterscotch fights with the hops and causes a slickness. Some faint black malt character. Kind of in a few different directions.
