GABF 2014. Dark brown with a medium head. Lightly tart malt aroma with some salt? Sour flavor. Light smoke. Malty. Syrupy body.

On tap at the Sanctuary Pub. Pours a brown/reddish color with a tan head. Aroma is berries and grapes, caramel malt and some smoke. Taste is slightly sour berries and grapes on a foundation of toasty dark malt. A campfire smokiness hits at the end. Flavors hit the palate apart staccato and don't necessarily all blend. Only a little sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draft. A dark black ruby color with some white head around the rim. Smells of grape juice, red wine, cherry. Taste is a bitter grape juice taste. Sour drops off quick and finishes sweet ripe fruit, grape, cherry, some barrel a little caramel malt. A little too much of the sweet fruit up front, and needs a little more balance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I was not aware of this style before trying this very interesting release from Destihl. After this American version I would love to get my hands on a sample or two of the native version for contrast. Being a sour style it has all the hallmarks you would expect from Destihl and is therefore worth trying especially if it makes an appearance at the Great Taste in a month.

Aroma / Appearance - A coppery murky base swirls around the glass with light stickiness. Vanilla head traps a crisp sourness, light caramel, and red vines. This is not that complex but it does not require much to be effective.

Flavor / Palate - Caramel, malt vinegar, and chocolate team up to form a memorable impression. The dry acidic finish is about as harsh as a typical gose but obviously with a different twist as the base is darker. Maybe other breweries will try their hands at it so I can get a few more samples for reference.

Pours a very dark reddish brown color with s small head and a bit of lacing on the glass.

The aroma is chocolate, tart cherries. It’s rig and lightly sweet with a little bit of clean laundry character.

The flavor is pretty darn tart with some sour charrs, some chocolate, some oaky character and a touch of earthy woodiness.

On tap @ Destihl. Hazed mahogany color with just a small off-white head. Sort of led off by sour dark fruit like unripe plums. A hint of smoke, some green apple, and a touch of red wine vinegar. There’s a fairly intense sourness to the flavor, and it’s a bit more smoky than the nose. Some sweet dates and sour plum. Raisin, black cherry, and a fair amount of green apple. Not my favorite.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy earthy brown with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has. A light sour note with earthy dark grains and a bit of must. Flavor had much more sour red fruits with dark grains and a bit of roast.

On tap @ Avery Sour Fest 2014. Pours a reddish brown appearance with a brown head. Tannic, dark grape, heavy aroma with some vinegar. Blackberry / raspberry / black cherry flavor with some acetic acid, vanilla, and wood. Finishes very tart. A bit strong for me, but not horrible.

Tap. Fluffy cappuccino light tan head, deep dark red brown body. Fruity sourness at first in the aroma, cherry, wood, some slight toast as well. Nicely tart, but not overly so. Rounds out with unripe berry, a touch of vinegar, toast and almost like a really dark chocolate note. Not doing the taste justice with my description. Lighter to medium body. Odd but fun brew.

Tap. Murky brown-amber pour with a spotty clingy head. Aroma is tart cherry, mild wood, little vinegar. Somewhat sharp tart on the tongue but not over the top. Smooth palate. Tasty brew.
