(Bottle) pours black with a small sized, creamy brown head. The aroma is burned malty with notes of tar, black coffee, fruity cocoa, salt liquorice and smoky asphalt. Undertones od vanilla, burned oak, Roasted cocoanut, old leathery port, some alcohol and bourbon. Good nose maybe just a bit too much bourbon and burned roast. The flavour is light to medium sweet, medium bitter and light acidic. Burned roast, wood, vanilla, bit vinous, dark fruits, some alcohol, fruity cocoa, tart and citric/earthy/light resinous hops. 33cL bottle, courtesy of blomster. Thanks, Christer! Pours a pitch-black color, minimal light getting through; significant, creamy, dense dark-brown head with excellent retention and lacing; beautiful pour on this, and lots of head retention for an imperial stout. An emphasis on burnt malts in the aroma, somewhat to an excess (a touch acrid), followed by nougat (for iowaherkeye), bitter chocolate, and a large amount of mineral hoppiness; still, a bit rough and seemingly chalky in the nose. Full body; medium to medium-high carbonation, surprisingly; significant alcoholic warmth coming through, and not particularly restrained or vinous. That high level of carbonation is a bit much for this type of beer: a mouthful. Following the aroma, there’s a huge amount of burnt and charred malts at the core of this, along with an enormous amount of piney and mineral hops; after the initial palate pummeling: milk and dark chocolate, roast, and a pleasant nuttiness; perhaps in five years this will be damn tasty, but right now the excess carbonation, heavy emphasis on burnt malts, and numbing bitterness just all comes across as a bit much for any one beer. Long, long finish of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and a lasting mineral bitterness; modestly dry and roasted on the far end.
