Solid and very drinkable amber with a nice ABV kick. I love picking up a growler of this to share or drink by myself.

on tap-pours a light tan head and dark red color. Aroma is sweet medium malt/some musty/peat/chocolate. Taste is lots of sweet medium malt/some musty/peat/chocolate, a little fruit, some earthy hops bite. Medium body.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Optigon (562) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - MAY 27, 2008
Pours dark red with a fine, white head. Flavor is butterscotch with a pleasant hop bitterness. I consider this a good hop bitterness. Reminds me a bit of Leinenkugel’s Red.
3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 shendrix (478) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 17, 2008
A very dark red, with caramelized hops set off against butterscotch on the palate.

draft at brewpub - Pours amber with a caramel malt aroma. The flavor is caramel malt with a fairly good hops bite. Thin bodied and very straightforward, it’s a quite drinkable brew.

Poured a clear dark amber color with a medium creamy beige head. Papery oxidized with a mild tartness. Very acidic and sour. Lactic.

Good beer, if you like malty, sweet, dark beers (which I do). Had a pint after dinner at the Brew Pub and after two pints of the Detroit Dwarf Zwickel. So perhaps it suffered after that excellent brew.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 pineypower (1816) - Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA - FEB 22, 2006
Pours out a deep reddish amber color with a small head, very little lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste is good, but for me its really not my style, sweet in the face malts, being a hop head this was not my thing, but I could appreciate the brew. Would try again if I came across it...got this on in a trade from....Sully I believe...thanks dude

at the brewpub. certainly nothing wrong with this beer. it’s DBC’s flagship ale, so they can’t go out on too much of a limb. after all, they need the mainstream customers who visit on tigers’ and lions’ gamedays. caramel and dark malt, and some cascade and other north american hops - otherwise, plain. if you like malty red ales, you’ll love this one!
