2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap poured into a sampler glass. Initially, a milk chocolate aroma comes off this one (or maybe even a chocolate milk?) with a fig-like sweet smell and, after it settles a bit, a strong, fresh espresso bean. It’s a dark, near opaque caramel brown topped by a coffee-tan head that keeps a medium-thick ring with a wispy accent on the surface, but leaves no lace. The taste is a medium bitter with a medium light sweetness. The beer has a light, soft carbonation which helps to give the beer a creamy texture. The medium-full malty body finishes with coffee grounds and grains. The coffee lingers a bit in the aftertaste.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 12, 2014 Tap: Deep, deep brown & burnt ruby body, topped off with a thin layer of khaki cream that takes no time settling to only a mild collar; light lacing left behind. Aroma has notes of burnt & roasted malts, light coffee beans, ash, & a slightly floral, mostly herbal/leafy hop character. Taste is a little more malt heavy with notes of roasted barley, toasted malts, black coffee, & some very faint caramel. Light hop presence, perhaps, but very light. Would like a bigger body, but not a bad porter - I wasn’t expecting much.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sample at the brewpub. Dark brownish pour with a medium creamy beige head that diminishes steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Light body with a sweet roasty character and notes of chocolate malt and a touch of coffee. The finish is sweet with a short malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap at the brewpub. Deep black pour with a tight dark tan head. Thick and sticky. The aroma is loaded with lots of cocoa and dark malt. Fairly assertive dark malt roastiness. A touch of bittersweet chocolate and cocoa as well as a touch of coffee toward the finish. The malts are quite expressive and bright, despite all the dark malts. Nice stuff really.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewpub.
Brown with some tan head. Aroma is milder than the breakfast stout but similar, with roasted malt and chocolate along with smoke. Smooth and smoky, pretty good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tap @ Detroit Beer - Roasty, chocolate goodness. Nice soft body and nice hoppy kick. Soft molasses and smooth and sessionable. Some herbal, earthy notes that follow through... and raisins.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft pint at the brewpub. Like the first beer I had at DBC, this seemed like a recipe beer -- Nothing too grand nor offensive either, just straight down the safe lane. Slightly chocolatey. (#3813, 1/23/2010)

Some fruity aroma. Dark coloured smooth on the palate and hoppy with a little dryness and bitterness in a crisp burnt roast finish.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a deep dark brown with thick tan head. Aroma strong of chocolate, oats, and roasted malt. Flavor matches the aroma, but it just doesn’t seem to all come together right for me.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark brown/black with a sweet, coffee, and chocolate flavor. Very similar to their Oatmeal stout, maybe with a lighter body.
