I don’t know how this stacks up to dubbels in the traditional style -- there is no comparison, really. This effort is sinuous and vinuous. It is tart and dry, with a very dark malt character, roast, pleasantly yeasty. I imagine this would make a killer draft, but alas I had only the bottle.

Pours dark with a thin head. Light aroma of caramel, molasses and hops. Decent taste that is a but different, malt and caramel, but you can taste something different, probably the sorghum syrup. Palate is okay, a little flabby maybe.

Mild roast aroma. Black pour, headless. Burned toast and charcoal flavor. Medium body, somewhat quaffable. Subtle dry plum notes in the finish. Much drier and substantially less fruity than typical dubbels. Enjoyable.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Serving: Draft at MacDowell’s Brew Kitchen. It pours a light cola color with a slight off white head. The nose has notes of dried fruit and Belgian yeast esters. A little weak on the palate with notes of dark fruit and a slight malt sweetness. It lacks character and doesn’t hold up well against it’s peers from Belgium. Light to medium body with a weak finish. Not worth seeking out, but not bad if you want something a little different.
