COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Belgian mountain-style dubbel brewed with raw sugar, dextrose, and Appalachian sorghum syrup for extra sexiness. Fermented with two Belgian yeast strains and finished with red wine yeast for dryness. Among The Gooch’s picks for one of the top 100,000 beers ever brewed.

Bottle: Appearance: clear cola brown with ruby tints and one finger quickly dissipating sudsy tan head. Aroma: dark dried fruit, dates, prunes, candied sugars, and banana. Taste: juicier flavor to dark fruits in the front that gradually fades to not much of anything but toasted malt and a dry wateriness (I know that’s an oxymoron) on the finish. Mouthfeel: thin to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall: the aroma sets up a promising beer, but the taste just falls completely flat. Very disappointing.

Aroma is sweet & caramely. Pour is deep brown w/out much of a head. Taste is primarily caramel w/out much else going on. It’s nice & pretty drinkable but not really memorable. Decent.

On tap at RFD. Deep mahogany color. Sugary aroma. Smooth finish. Pretty good Abby ale for a Virginia brewery ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a dark amber. Lots of belgian yeasts, sweetness and sugars. Caramely and very good.

Dark brown coloured body with bright violet highlights and a thin tan head. Very nice when held up to the light. Aroma of bananas, yeast, bread, malt, alcohol and quite a bit of sugars. Medium-bodied; Very assertive roasted malt flavour with some nuts and earth and a relatively light feel with raisins and some of the yeast flavour at the end. Aftertaste shows a bit of an earthy character with peat and concord grapes, but little else - surprisingly weak. Overall, smells and looks great, but the flavour simply isn’t there - nor is any complexity or nice robust flavours. Sadly enough, worth passing up - not a great offering from the otherwise good brewery. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 07-February-2013 for US$1.99 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 29-March-2013.

Draft at Taphouse/Queensway. Black beer, a hint of licorice is the initial impression. Sweetbread and raisin carries. Pretty mellow and unremarkable as a dubbel, but exceptionally drinkable and good for brunch. (#4965, 3/17/2013)

I don’t know how this stacks up to dubbels in the traditional style -- there is no comparison, really. This effort is sinuous and vinuous. It is tart and dry, with a very dark malt character, roast, pleasantly yeasty. I imagine this would make a killer draft, but alas I had only the bottle.

Tap at Rustico. Pours clear dark brown with a medium, frothy off-white head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is dates and figs with cookie and caramel malt and light earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruity esters, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Pours dark with a thin head. Light aroma of caramel, molasses and hops. Decent taste that is a but different, malt and caramel, but you can taste something different, probably the sorghum syrup. Palate is okay, a little flabby maybe.
