Growler from the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with red highlights. Thin head leaves a cream colored ring around the edge of the glass. Aroma shows strong coffee notes along with some roasted malts, chocolate and a faintly fruity finish. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, green apple, caramel. Medium bodied. Smooth mouthfeel.

On tap at Rustico during the Devil’s Backbone NoVA launch. Served in a taster glass.
Pours near-black with a nice mocha head and a touch of lacing. The nose carries quite a bit of chocolate and some roast. Almost seems as if this one is barrel-aged, as everyone there seemed to get some oak and bourbon notes from it, however light. Flavor had nice chocolate and a bit of vanilla. Big body with a bit of booze. Nice.

Courtesy of dkachur at the Richmond Gathering. Black, just a ring of head. Roasty and espresso aroma. Flavor matched. Just not much to it here, sort of a paint by numbers Impy. Perhaps suffered from hand bottling, but I really don’t think so. I simply didn’t find the layers of complexity that others did. I’ll have to swing out to the brewery for a re-rate in the future.

Draft 1/2 pint at the brewpub; Pours as it should, pitch black with a beautiful tan pillowtop. Light aroma with a hint of licorice. The first sip is a kick in the nuts, full-on anise, molasses and day-old coffee. Would like it to have a little more body. (#3502, 2/11/2009)
