3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Brewer’s Cask in Baltimore. Light hops and wheat aroma. Golden with slight lacing head. Mostly floral hop with some citrus and pine as well. Also malt, wheat and honey flavors. Not quite as intense as other IPAs, which makes it nicely drinkable. Good stuff - nice to have Devils Backbone again.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 05.28.14. Nose is strong citrus (mainly tart grapefruit) with caramel, a little dusty. Pours rich, deep golden with carbonation a tick above average and a tight off-white head. Taste oily, perfumed with hops, strong citrus with medium bitterness; moderately dry with lemon and grapefruit, faint resin but more distinct hop oil. Caramel and malt in general weaken in the presence f such strong perfume. Fullish body a bit heavy, but a solid hop bomb for this strength, very robust all-around.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Clear orange copper color with minimal white head. Aroma of pine, toasted malt, and citrus-some metallic aroma. Pine, citrus, and a hop bite that is sharp, but seems watered down. Okay beer.

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a medium golden color with a huge, just off-white head. The head is thick and beautiful and has wonderful retention. It eventually fades however to give a great level of lacing.
Smell – The smell was a wonderfully sweet and lightly hopped smell. The sweetness was of a nice mango aroma mixed with caramel and some citrus. The hop aromas were of an earthy and grapefruit aroma, which complemented the sweet quite well.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready and very lightly caramel sweetened base. At the start there are hop flavors of an earthy and pine nature. As the taste advances toward the middle a grapefruit hop flavor combines with the earthy and pine hops. This bready and hop flavor takes the taste to its finish. In the end a very long lasting bitter earthy and pine hop flavor are left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The beer is very chewy with a nice creaminess and a slightly below average carbonation level. The creaminess and chewiness is great for the bready and hop flavors and makes for a great feeling brew.
Overall – While the nose is deceiving in its sweetness, it is a very nice feeling bitter IPA. The hop aftertaste is one of the longest lingering I have had for such a low abv brew and is rather pleasant. A very nice IPA.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draught at the Hyatt in DC. The beer is a clear copper color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily to a film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Light to medium body with flavors of hops, citrus and grainy malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a short hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.

I had never heard of this brewery or this beer prior to buying it, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was on sale, and it was an IPA, and that’s a good combination in my book. Fortunately, it turned out to be pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but a lot better than some of the mediocre attempts at IPAs made by some breweries in the price class I bought it in (Not sure what the regular price category is). One always fears getting one of those "marketing purposes" IPAs where they use the name and it doesn’t have nearly enough bite for the style in situations like that, but this works. It’s a west coast IPA along the lines of Sierra Nevada Torpedo or a Sam Adams Rebel IPA, a lot of cascade hops, roughly that quality or a notch above. It’s not one of the best IPAs or two I’ve ever had, those are doubles, but it is definitely in the mix as one of the better IPAs for the sale price (Which dippped it 50 cents or $1 under Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada for a 6 pack). Wouldn’t buy it for over $10, but I wouldn’t buy anything for over $10. It won’t overwhelm you with awesomeness, but don’t be afraid to grab some if the price is right or the selection is poor. A quality ale.
