3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Transfer from BA review on 3-2-13-
Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep black color with ruby highlight seen shinning through the body when held up to the light. Upon pouring there was a big billowy cream almost grayish head that faded relatively quickly as the large carbonation bubbles popped. Once the head receded it left a persistent film on the brew with a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma was heaviest of roasted malt with some hints of a more bitter cocoa mixed within. Other lighter hop aromas of a earthy and herbal nature were mixed with these giving a dry and roasty aroma overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor of a toasted dark bread, some caramel and a bit coffee. Notes of a semi-sweet cocoa come to the tongue more toward the middle where they sweeten the taste ever sol slightly. Notes of char and a earthy hop flavor then come to the tongue more toward the end, leaving a drier, but overall relatively smooth flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer was on the medium to slightly above medium side in terms of its creaminess with a carbonation level that was average to slightly on the higher side. The creamier body was fantastic for the roasty and toasty flavor of the brew while the carbonation level keep it on the easy drinking and more refreshing side.
Overall – A pretty nice brew overall with a good roasty flavor and nice drinkability.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Devil’s Backbone Schwartz Bier has a thin-to-medium, cream-colored head, a very dark brown (lighter around the edges) appearance, some visible stray bubbles, and moderate lacing left behind. The aroma is of toasted, dark bread crust, some cream, and general malt. Taste is of sweet malt, bread crust, and just a kiss of the hops. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Devil’s Backbone Schwartz Bier finishes semi-wet and highly drinkable. RJT

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark-chocolate brown with a thick tan head. Aroma has notes of roast malt, coffee and horehound. Flavor has a core of roast malt and adds coffee, smoky, chocolate and caramel notes. Texture seems a tad thin, but is rather fizzy. May the Schwartz be with you.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Appearance: deep, dark brown; nearly black, in fact, with ruby red edges and half a finder of very creamy, light tan head that slowly shrinks to a thick, soft cap, leaving tons of lace. Aroma: light roast coffee, hint of dark chocolate and vanilla. Taste: dark, bittersweet chocolate, milk chocolate pudding cup, caramel, graham cracker, vanilla, brown toast. Finish: lasting light, bittersweet chocolate and roast coffee, with just a hint of earthy, grassy hops. Notes: Superlative. I mean really, really good. Palate is creamy, and light, yet full-bodied enough to hold the well-balanced flavors. Top shelf.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle... Pours black with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. The nose is grainy and loaded with deeply roasted notes. The bittersweet flavor mirrors the aroma, but also offers a nice kiss of vanilla. The lengthy finish is crisp, burnt and bitter. Bottle courtesy of ygtbsm93!
