COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A German-style black lager. Hints of caramel and coffee blend in this light to medium dark lager. Do not let the color fool you, this beer goes down very easy. May the schwartz be with you!

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz ($2): Pours dark brown with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is bodega coffee mixed with caramelized sugars. Taste is simple, but very well done. Hints of chocolate and coffee. On the sweeter side of things. However, it is still refreshing. Good show.

Schwarzbier is one of my favorite styles. Devil’s Backbone is brewing an exceptional version of the style. It is rich in the aroma, taste, and palate displaying coffee and roasty malts in all. The finish is warm with a slight almost espresso like bite and gloriously long in the mouth.

Pours black with good head and lacing. Light roast, watery palate consistent with style. Light sweet finish with some caramel. Thanks to the flatmate for this one. Bottle.

Black brown pour with light tan head and lace. Aroma is roasted malt. Flavor is semi sweet roasted malt. Medium bodied but just a tad thin and fizzy for me. still a pretty solid sb,

What a smooth and delicious schwartz bier! Pour is a nice pitch black with a brown head. Flavor is roasted malts. Palate is very smooth with a nice roasted aftertaste.

On draft. Flavors of coffee, toffee and caramel, all with a pervading roastiness. Finishes clean, dry as a bone. Super spring/summer beer.

I stumbled across this beer at a bar in DC and fell in love with it. Pours very dark - but dob’t let that fool you - easy drinking beer. Notes of caramel and coffee after it is poured with a decent head. This is a fine beer and I think you should give it a try!

Bottle. I didn't like this one at all. Taste is off, almost sour. Palate is thin. Not recommended.

Rich deep dark brown body with a lighter brown and deeper than cola coloured tint - all with a thin, half a centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, grass and a lot of deep bitterness from the malt. Light-bodied; Strong roasty flavours with the nuts and caramel coming out the strongest, then showing a light grassy and dry flavour. Aftertaste shows some deep bitterness, but mostly a dry herbal note and very light smoked flavour. Overall, a nice and strong bitter flavour from the malt and little else, especially in terms of complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Giant Food in Arlington, Virginia on 12-March-2013 for US$1.67 sampled at home in Washington on 30-March-2014, just over a year later.
