3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aromas of roasted coffee, caramel, and light, floral earthiness. Black with ruby highlights and a mostly diminishing, off-white head. Dry, somewhat bitter, and somewhat savory, with hints of cocoa. Light-medium bodied with a good level of carbonation, and a clean, roasty finish.

12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a near black with a beige head of foam that fizzles out quickly. The aroma has notes of dark roast and burnt toffee. The taste is roasty and mostly roast and caramel. I get a touch of sweetness in the finish. Higher carbonation. Medium body.

Had this at the pub a couple of times. OK for a Schwarz, well made but not really standing out. Sure, I realize it has won a few awards, but I’ve found the roast character lacking in this one. It is quite drinkable though, hence the decent rating.

Devil’s Backbone Schwartz Bier from the bottle. A very dark brown color. The aroma is of toast and general malt. Taste is of sweet malt, bread crust, and just a bit of the hops. Kind of watery feel. Pretty good overall.

Bottle to a pint glass. Thanks Rick. Dark brown with thin mocha head. Some coffee, dark roast malt and chocolate notes. Sweet toffee and fresh bread. A bit thin for the style... Smooth mellow finish...

The Lindros rating for the brew, been getting a lot of them lately. Bottle, mine says 6.1% abv, and the spelling annoys annoys annoys annoys me! Nose is heavy dark roast with strong coffee and faint caramel, a little scorch and faint prickle of hops. Pours Coke-colored with a fizzy Coke head (tan). Watery body with gentle roast, very slight acrid acidity and low bitterness to match the light-medium sweetness (certainly not cloying, thank goodness). A touch of alcohol showing the mouthfeel and weight, but no heat or fumes, and to the inky mouthfeel they’ve added an oat-like silkiness, very nice. Malt comes out for me with a bit more volume and way surpasses the coffee, could have used some fruity notes in the bg for bonus points and differentiation from porter, but there’s really nothing to complain about. Good inauspicious lager character and better than a lot of this style I had in-country. Very very drinkable, well done!
