3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Let’s make this beer official! 10th rate for this Schwartz. 12oz bottle I picked up in Fredericksburg. Pours a watery mostly opaque black with some creamy, beige head. Nose is nice, stale bread, some light smoke, a little Worcestershire sauce, malt, very light soy. Flavor is nice, more depth than the standard Schwartz, grilled meat, some mushroom, malt, brown toasted bread, some coffee, metallic tonic water, some soy. Medium bodied, dry, mostly clean finish. Really solid.

Keg @ Devils Backbone. The pour’s deep brown with a small head. Mellow red apple, berry on the nose. Mild roasted grain. Some tobacco. The flavor is similar. Brown sugar and berry. A touch of roast, burnt toast. Mild hop bitterness. Light body, fine carbonation. Good.

12 ounce bottle from Nate as a Christmas mixer. Black with a tan head. I get ash and chocolate in the aroma with a little roast. The flavor is earthy with that roast and chocolate. The ash, too. A nice smooth easy drinking beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body under a small fizzy light brown head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is pretty nice, roasty and slightly sweet with licorice and coffee. The flavor is just lightly sweet with some burnt caramel, licorice, coffee, and a light bitterness on the finish. Light to medium bodied with a light cling and soft gentle carbonation. Pretty nice beer, I enjoyed this one.

The Lindros rating for the brew, been getting a lot of them lately. Bottle, mine says 6.1% abv, and the spelling annoys annoys annoys annoys me! Nose is heavy dark roast with strong coffee and faint caramel, a little scorch and faint prickle of hops. Pours Coke-colored with a fizzy Coke head (tan). Watery body with gentle roast, very slight acrid acidity and low bitterness to match the light-medium sweetness (certainly not cloying, thank goodness). A touch of alcohol showing the mouthfeel and weight, but no heat or fumes, and to the inky mouthfeel they’ve added an oat-like silkiness, very nice. Malt comes out for me with a bit more volume and way surpasses the coffee, could have used some fruity notes in the bg for bonus points and differentiation from porter, but there’s really nothing to complain about. Good inauspicious lager character and better than a lot of this style I had in-country. Very very drinkable, well done!
