COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A German-style black lager. Hints of caramel and coffee blend in this light to medium dark lager. Do not let the color fool you, this beer goes down very easy. May the schwartz be with you!

Appearance: deep, dark brown; nearly black, in fact, with ruby red edges and half a finder of very creamy, light tan head that slowly shrinks to a thick, soft cap, leaving tons of lace. Aroma: light roast coffee, hint of dark chocolate and vanilla. Taste: dark, bittersweet chocolate, milk chocolate pudding cup, caramel, graham cracker, vanilla, brown toast. Finish: lasting light, bittersweet chocolate and roast coffee, with just a hint of earthy, grassy hops. Notes: Superlative. I mean really, really good. Palate is creamy, and light, yet full-bodied enough to hold the well-balanced flavors. Top shelf.

I stumbled across this beer at a bar in DC and fell in love with it. Pours very dark - but dob’t let that fool you - easy drinking beer. Notes of caramel and coffee after it is poured with a decent head. This is a fine beer and I think you should give it a try!

What a smooth and delicious schwartz bier! Pour is a nice pitch black with a brown head. Flavor is roasted malts. Palate is very smooth with a nice roasted aftertaste.

Schwarzbier is one of my favorite styles. Devil’s Backbone is brewing an exceptional version of the style. It is rich in the aroma, taste, and palate displaying coffee and roasty malts in all. The finish is warm with a slight almost espresso like bite and gloriously long in the mouth.

Dark brown pour. Samples at GABF. Chocolate, charcoal, ash, hops and chocolate. This beer is in harmony. So smooth.

Very dark brown with a generous tan head. The aroma is very light and soft. Some caramel. The flavor is light malt with little or no hops. Clean and refreshing. Very nice Schwarzbier.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2014 Nearing the end of the "lost" ratings. Deep brown, slight head. Light roast malt aromas. Slightly astringent. Coffee flavor, rather light bodied. Coffee flavor finishes. A bit thin for my preference. RERATE: 08/13/11. Special thanks for providing a sixtel of this at CAH downtown during Dominion Cup! Better than I remember, more full-bodied, more emphasis on coffee notes. Quite enjoyable. RERATE: June 2014, identical to last rerate, from pitcher at RVC tap takeover.
