3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Total Wine, Cívill. So this beer was only just released in the area, but was apparently bottled in early March. What gives? Pours medium amber with a prominent white head. The nose is pretty much what youíd expect. Big, syrupy, boozy and intimidating. Crystallized tropical fruits. Plenty of syrupy honey. Alcohol. The flavorís similar. Flabby as all hell. Croissant, honey, some underarm and grapefruit. Very, very sweet. Prominent malt character. In this day, recipes like this feel pretty dated.

A little sweeter than I was expecting. Lotís of malt. Thereís definitely a big hoppiness but itís hidden by the big pervasive malts. I feel like Iíve had this beer before and thatís whatís bothering me. Itís a big sounding beer but it doesnít deliver as big as expected. This is a really fresh bottle too and Iím still just overwhelmed by syrupy malt weirdness. Not my kind of dipa but Iím sure someone out there loves this. For me, I was hoping for more hops and less malt.

The best thing Iíve had yet from Devilís Backbone, and a beer Iíd happily recommend to fans of the style. This beer pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a head that fades to a ring around the rim. The aroma is grapefruit, a little pine, a little grass... all hops, all very crisp. The flavor brings buttery malt to the back of the tongue, while the hops stay very forward, very aggressive. Devilís Backbone can hang with the big boys now.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a slightly hazy burnt orange color with a thin foamy white head that dissipated within about a minute. Light lacing prevailed around the glass.
The smell had a ton of bittersweet citrus to piney goodness. Grapefruit-like in a moderate sort of way.
The taste was bittersweet all the way through in a fantastic conglomeration of the previously mentioned flavors.
On the palate, this one sat at a medium on the body with a tad of sessionability but thereís a good pummeling of my tongue so this might not be too sessionable the more I think about it.
Overall, this was a pretty good DIPA that I could have again.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tasted from bottle at the late night tasting after the Grand Tasting at RBWG Asheville, thanks to Drake, I think. Pours clear golden with an average white head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is dank resin hops with some sweetish caramel malt. The flavor features some caramel malt up front moving to the bitter pine resin hops. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long bitter hops with some caramel finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice completely crisp and clear light copper coloured body with a bright orange glow and a rich peach and light amber tint, all with a very thin off-white head. Aroma of strong hops, alcohol, oak, dry grass, apricots and a good amount of pine. Medium-bodied; Strong hop flavours throughout with resin, pine, pineapple and a hint of tropical notes coming through, but all with a mildish malt backbone - not horribly strong, which is nice, and a very pungent fruit flavour that dominates the finish. Aftertaste has a pleasant sweetness from the fruits with a good pine and hop kick that lasts for quite a while. Overall, a very nice Imperial IPA with a good flavour profile and a more hop-forward beer! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington, DC (Foggy Bottom) on 24-February-2014 for US$3.49 sampled at home in Washington on 18-June-2014 a few hours before leaving for Asia for a last sample of the good beer available at home in my backyard!

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate complex hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good beer that met my expectations.
