3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Snallygaster 2014. Handed to me, with some hesitation, I took my first sip. This poured a yellow color with a medium sized slightly off-white head. I wanted to avoid this beer, it’s a smoked beer. Not my favorite style. However, this particular brew was a nice light lagered beer, with some very mild smoke notes that didn’t overpower it nearly as much as I expected. Like a light bbq or mild beef jerky. Decent.

Like most smokey lagers, it’s not super drinkable, but still ok. Pours amber without much head or lacing. Charcoal meat kind of taste, some caramel. Tap at Snallygaster.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Keg @ WF Charlottesville. Light golden amber color with a small white head. Smoked ham on the nose. Little else. A bit of burnt brown sugar. The taste is caramel-glazed ham. White bread. Crisp carbonation keeps it light and zippy. Not bad.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
At GABF. Huge aroma of birch-ish smoke. Taste is of sweet, peppery bacon. Not as intense as Aecht Sch, but closer than any USA rauchbier. Yum.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Serving: Draft. Pours a cloudy brown with a small, light tan head. The nose is lighter in the smoke than an Aecht marzen with a little meatiness to it. The flavor has some smoked meat, a little earth, and light malt notes. Finishes fairly clean, but not as crisp or as clean as I hoped. Good, not great.
