Complex flavors from English ale yeast, specialty malts, and hops create a depth of synergy in this well matured strong beer. Barleywines are the cognacs of the brewing world. 40 IBU

Keg @ Mellow Mushroom C’ville. The pour’s deep amber with a small off-white head. The nose is light booze. Cherry, brown bread. Sweet honey, bear claw donut. The taste is ribbon candy, apricot. Baked pumpernickel bread. Earthy, hot sweetness. Stocky, some pineapple, grassy hop. Full body, soft carbonation.

Elwood (3336) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - SEP 2, 2013
Draft at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours a deep ruddy color with a small tan head. The nose has notes of plastic, dough, and citrus. Sweet up front and obviously boozy. Rather viscous on the tongue with heavy plastic notes, caramel, and a dull bitterness. Not sure if this keg has been sitting around awhile, but this one sure doesn’t match the others ratings I read in terms of quality.

Aged over a year. Aromas of nuts, cocoa, vanilla, and subtle lemon. Red-brown with a moderate, beige head. Dry and balanced. Medium body, low-average carbonation, and finishes clean.

Oak and overripe orange nose. Cloudy amber, thick head that uniformly coats the glass. Overripe orange, marzipan at midpalate, amaretto in the finish. Dusty and oaky throughout. Booooozy, boozy.. Spectacular and tasty with nice aged character.

radagast83 (7325) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - FEB 23, 2013
Draft at Mad Fox Brewing’s 3rd Annual Barleywine Festival. Poured a clear amber color with a small off-white, almost wispy head. Aroma was toffee notes, with some notes of caramel, hops, citrus notes. Lighter, a touch thinner body than I expected, alcohol is there - but not overtly boozy. Some fruit notes round this particular one out.
