A Belgian inspired pale ale that blends the traditional hoppy English IPAs with the layered yeast complexity of Belgian ales. From the heart of darkness, a pale ale of distinquished quality.

Formerly known as Belgian Congo Pale Ale.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours a very pale gold with a small, white head. The nose has lots of herbal hops and a touch of Belgian candy sugar. Perhaps some tropical fruit. The flavor is a nice mix of pineapple, herbal hops, and some candy sugar. Medium bodied with average carbonation. An unusual but nice mix of flavors. I enjoyed this one.

On tap at Rustico during the Devil’s Backbone NoVA launch. Served in a taster glass. Pours a clear yellow-straw color with a nice fluffy white head and some nice ringy lacing on the way down. The nose carries some straw and hay plus some nice Belgian yeast alongside some tropical and citrus notes. Flavor gets a good bit of yeast spice along with some nice American hop components. Body is light and crisp with a dry finish. I’d have this one again for sure.

(12oz bottle) Crystal clear, pale orange-gold boy with a minimal white head. Sweet pale malt, and very grassy hops, some light citrus. Medium body, oily texture, small to medium amount of soft carbonation. Some initial sweetness with notes of bubblegum, but it quickly dries out with grassy hops; some nice acidity; lighter fruit notes, too. Not noticing much of the belgian yeast.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria tap ($6): Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is mostly hops, with some fruitiness. This ale doesn’t go very hard for a Belgian yeast character. It is mostly a lightly hopped ale that can’t really fit into other styles. Fruitiness is abundant, but nor particularly memorable. In any case, this was still good and my criticisms shouldn’t take away from the fact that this was a very drinkable and enjoyable brew.

Strong barley wheat smell on the nose. Light bodied. Golden color but a bit darker which is something nice. Smooth with malt on the palate along with some barley. Hops are somewhat hidden in there. When this one leaves the scene there is not much left there. Decent beer though.
