3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aromas of toast, apple butter, and toffee. Clear, dark gold, with low retaining white head. Toasty, nutty, and dry, with prevalent, tannic, hop bitterness. Light-medium body, decent carbonation, finishes with clean, dry malty tones.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Pours a clear dark copper body under a small fizzy white head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is slightly grainy with toasted and lightly caramel maltiness. Minimal to no hops in the aroma. The flavor is pretty bland and boring with thin husky and grainy toasted malt, almost completely lacking in hops. There’s a lack of smoothness to this as well that belies the fact that this is a lager. Thin and watery with fizzy carbonation. Pretty disappointing, I thought that I had heard good things about this brewery. Guess I need to try some others from them.

Poured from a tap. No head or lacing. Nice dark golden color. Unremarkable aroma, malty flavor, full body and nice nutty taste coming through. Not a lager fan, but this wasn’t bad for a wing restaurant.

At Barbecue Dave’s, Sterling VA, November 2013. Deep amber with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish lager, with some caramel and a few hops in the finish. Ok.

Bartender poured a taste. Bitter, bland, lackwd any lager qualities. Yuck...have I filled up enough letters to post this comment?

Medium sized off white head with fair retention and lace. Clear, light copper hued brew. Nose is malty with caramel and light breads. Body is light with a decent carbonation, faintly oily, slightly tart. Lightly sweet malt flavors with a little bit of hop spicyness.Grainy with an almost dry finish. Went well with my barbecued, pulled chicken sammich. Draft at Old South Smokehouse.

Looks a pretty amber in the glass, but the fun stops there. Smells and tastes, I hate to say it, like a cheap domestic. Would not buy again.

Bottle. Thin head. Tea colored. Tastes similar to commercial description - some bready malt but not much bitterness. Good example of a Vienna larger. Will buy again.

Just know that I like it. Appearance: Color is reddish amber and mostly clear. Aroma: Bready malt. There is no bitter bite to this beer. Smooth, "bready" malt with slight hop taste to it. Love this beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer is copper to amber colored with a half inch of head. The aroma brings lager character, yeast, a touch of fruit, sweet breads, grain. A tad sweet, countered to a small degree by a touch of bitterness. Pretty light in body with moderate carbonation. A nice complement to the bratwurst and sauerkraut.

I am certainly no expert on the art of brewing of craft beer, and I am most certainly a layman with regard to the terminology used by many adept reviewers on Rate Beer. Lagers are not typically my style of choice unless I am cooking with beer. This lager, from Devil’s Backbone, lacks balance, a quality in many lagers that I do not care for. There is an abundance of flavor in this lager, citrusy hops and caramel malt with a nice dry finish. Best lager that I’ve had.
