COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional Bavarian-style wheat beer is hazy gold in color, with a lively fruity finish that has hints of clove and banana. This is the beer that started the odyssey that led to the creation of Devils Backbone Brewing Company. During a ski trip to the Alps, DBBC founder Steve Crandall discovered and fell in love with Hefeweizen. Now we bring Hefeweizen to the Blue Ridge. 11.8 degrees plato, 13 IBU’s, 4.8% alcohol by volume.

Draft at the brewpub. Poured a hazy straw-yellow color with a large white head. Aroma was some wheat notes, banana and cloves. Flavor was nice banana notes, cloves and a solid wheat character to it. Highly enjoyable.

Floral, perfume, cider, and honey aromas. Lightly hazy, pale gold, with a white head of good retention. Taste has a touch of sweetness, with fragrant, floral, clove, and honey flavors. Light-medium body, good carbonation, and a slightly honeyed finish.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 11/21/12

Aroma: The nose is right on style, with wheat, lots of clove, and some banana
Appearance: This one pours a cloudy golden-white color with some white lace as well
Flavor: It has a fairly typical hefe taste as well, that much resembles the nose component-wise
Palate: This one has a lightly clean feel, with a soft carbonation, and a somewhat dry finish
Overall Impression: This one came off an on-style Hefe, but it isn’t really all that interesting or exciting. I sampled some really good beers at Devil’s Backbone, but this one wasn’t really a favorite for me.

Overripe lemon, banana, and clove nose. Milky yellow, medium head. Tangy banana flavor, which lingers on the palate for a long time. Decidedly no cloves present on the palate. Very thin. Like the brewer’s Roseland Wheat, this was also thin and soapy, but this is quite a bit better. Either way, I’m not sure wheats are this brewer’s forte.

Tap. Hazy light yellow. Aroma of sour apple and spice- flavor follows. Seems a bit out of kilter.

Tap at brewery. Pours hazy yellow with a medium, creamy white head, medium-long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is wheat, lemon-lime, banana and clove esters. Flavor is spicy wheat, clove and banana esters, and a dry finish. Light body and carbonation, low warmth.

On tap at the brewpub last weekend. Pours a very hazy light yellow color with a booming white head that is quite fluffy and sticks around for a bit. Rings and sheets of lacing on the way down. The nose brings some light bubblegum, clove, and banana, though it’s certainly a bit muted. The flavor takes a bit step up from there with heavy bubblegum and light clove, along with some banana as it warms. Light body with good carbonation and a slight creaminess. Very well done. Serving type: on-tap
