We weren’t trying to be revolutionary in 2002, we just wanted to brew an interesting beer style using extra ingredients we had on hand. The resulting contribution to craft beer’s renaissance, was this rye-centric India Pale Ale. At 85 IBUs, California Sunshine Rye IPA is exceptionally well-balanced with assertive hop bitterness, a toasty, bready malt mouthfeel, and a grassy, dry finish. Enjoy our uniquely original re-imagining of a traditional English style IPA while pondering being the craft beer polymath you surely are. RyeIPA@DevilsCanyon.com

US pint can from Little Leeds Beer House, shared in a neighbour’s sunny back garden. Pours hazy gold with a thick white head. Aromas of resin, heady citrus. Taste is bitter, thick, toffee. Sickly finish.

Cloudy orange pour from 22oz bottle at home. Yeasty and maybe grain and honey aroma. Tons of foamy head I couldn't control. Rye and a little boring. Nothing good or bad to say

Appearance: slightly hazy pale amber with two fingers of rocky off-white head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Aroma: citrus, rising, floral, sour rye, caramel malt, doughy bread. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter, light sour. (7/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitter finish. (4/5) Not bad, but it could use a little more definition on the tongue. The aromas are promising, but they quite don’t deliver on the tongue. Somewhat surprisingly, despite the added sharpness of the rye, it’s not quite as bitter as the high IBU would suggest it’s going to be. Still, a decent enough drink. (15/20)

Sample at the Tehachapi Beer & Wine Festival on 07/18/2015: Clear orange-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Strings of lacing. Aroma of floral hops, malt and fruit. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, rye malt and citrus. The finish is moderately bitter with a rye and hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

16oz. can from Total Wine, Tampa.

Ft. Lauderdale, Fl - Total Wine - 16 oz can. Hazy dark orange pour, soft, snow white head that leaves a light film of lacing, Pleasant spruce aroma, rye adds a touch of spearmint. Solid IPA flavor, standard citrus bitterness, some spearmint thrown in for good measure from the rye, a hint of caramel sweetness. Decently thick mouthfeel.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. Hazy amber coloured with a bitter, tart orange marmalade and floral fruity citrus flavour, strong malt and rye notes followed by bitter pine on the smooth herbal finish. Very Nice!

Can. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Hazy, dark gold. Film of off white head. Spicy, juicy, fusty, mandarin hop. Soft caramel. Taste is lightly spicy bitter. Nice balance by way of a toffee sweetness. Smooth palate, with a rich chew. Finishes long, fruity, zesty bitter, with that spice lingering all the way.
