Full Boar Scotch Ale won First Place Gold in the English and Scottish Strong Ale Category at the 2003 California State Fair Commercial Craft Brewing Competition. This ale is deeply malted and caramel apparent with overtones of chocolate and a slight hint of a mild, smoky flavor.

Inky black with a fizzy tan head which quickly disappears. Sweet aroma. Sweet taste. Leaves a feeling in your mouth like you've been sucking on a mint without the minty flavor. Not a big fan. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From the 16 oz can. Pours black red and oily. Taste is medium bodied malt, peat, caramel and light smoke. Lots of flavor and complex. Aroma is more of the same. Restrained but very easy to drink.

"eh. this was ok. it initialy had too much of that lemony astringency that some scotch ales can have in the nose and flavor. i’d have scored this lower, but it faded as the beer warmed. what was left was a slightly too light, but pleasant smokey, peatym fruity malt beer. ok, but subpar for the style."

Dark, cola colored beer with a thin, white head. Aromas of toffee, and dark coffee/chocolate. Tastes of dark chocolate, assorted nuts, toffee, and caramel. Smoky/woody flavors are present as well. Semi-sweet lactic chocolate/smoke finish. Silky smooth and easy to drink. This was delicious.

Thanx Dara for the can. This was poured into a thistle. The appearance was a dark red to brown color with a one and a half finger white foamy head. The lacing was there as it speckled and slid around in a messy sort of way. The smell had a light bready sort of yeasty roastiness that came through slightly like a biscuit. The taste took those flavors and added a nice caramel and toffee-ness rolling all around and added a nice element of smoke at the end. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a slight sessionability about it. As it warms, a nice creamy sort of delicate soothing nakedness strolls across my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Scotch I could bang again.

Transfer from BA review on 7-1-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a dark amber color with hints of red and a decent two finger white head. The head fades rather fast leaving a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is largely of a bready malt aroma, being a mix of toasted bread and a more biscuit like smell. Along with these aromas is a moderate sweetness consisting of caramel and toffee with the overall aroma being rounded out with some lighter smoke smells and a bit of alcohol. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet and bready flavor of caramel and bread. As the flavors advances notes of smoke and some darker roasted malt and darker fruit flavors creep their way onto the scene. Soon after a little bit of peaty and a woody flavor enter the taste along with a light cocoa flavor. A boozy taste joins the crowd of tastes at the end producing a sweet, medium roasted and warming flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the just above medium side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A slight increase in thickness may have been even better for the blend of light smoke and sweet, but the carbonation was rather nice for the both. Overall the feel was quite good. Overall – A pretty average scotch ale but with some nicer qualities of smoke and a bit of booziness that step it up a bit. It is a rather enjoyable drink overall.

Poured into a pint glass from a growler straight from the brewery via the Roachman (thanks Aaron!). Pours brown/black with a tan head. Smell is slight and sweet. Tastes of earthiness, coffee/toffee, chocolate/cacao, caramel, a nice sweet maltiness there. It is thin with light carbonation. This would be I would drink instead of a Guinness when I make the ol’ black and tans. No alcohol taste even at 7.4. Very good fall/winter brew - stop by the brewery if ever around San Carlos for a growler to go.

Can with James and Dad. Clear dark brown with a creamy beige head. The aroma is caramel, nutty, biscuity, peat, cocoa, a little fruity but not the fruitiest of scotch ales. The aroma is reminiscent of my sleeping bag, in which a can of this (which was destined for my first tasting) imploded while hiking the Overland Track. Anyway, the flavour has plenty of malty notes, caramel and toffee, it is fairly sweet but actually has a good balance.
