3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 baobubba (455) - Starkville, Mississippi, USA - AUG 24, 2003
Golden brown and lifeless. First whiff is of vegetables (cooked sweet corn) with some butterscotch and fruit. Upon closer inspection the butterscotch became cotton-candy and caramel mixed with a bit of toast. Herbal type hop aromas round everything out. Sweet flavor with a moderte bitterness and a slight roast/smoke finish. Basic example of a barley wine.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Murphy (1759) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 13, 2003
Taste was pretty bitter with very apparent alcohol. Not a bad barleywine, but somewhat lacking in character.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Verne (261) - Enumclaw, Washington, USA - MAY 6, 2003
Big rocky head and it lasted the whole way through the best head I have ever seen on a barley wine. Burnt toast, raisins, thick, chewy, a bit sour and mildly bitter. Well balanced flavor profile you can tell the alcohol is there but that isn’t a bad thing in this case. Not a mellow barley wine, maybe a little age would help. Well crafted beer a must try if you haven’t yet
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 nstal (237) - Houston, Texas, USA - MAR 14, 2003
The label on this bottle looks like the labels you can print out and put on CD's that you were too cheap to buy so you burned them on your computer. Nice dark red color, and its amazing that i'm a few minutes into a barley wine and there's still bubbles from the head left. Splendid balance of flavors, perfect amount of ABV, not hidden, yet not focused upon. Quality brew.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 BillKismet (2760) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 30, 2002
Appealing maroon color, but with little carbonation and poor head retention. The aroma seems heavy at first, and features peaks of sweetness (malt?). The body has a standard malt character for a barley wine and the alcohol is quite detectable--though not unpleasantly/obtrusively so. This is a fairly well balanced barley wine with rounded flavors that leave the sensation of a cough syrup anesthesized sensation on the palate.
