| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 16, 2008 4/16/2008: Dick’s Barley Wine Ale has a rich, malty caramel/toffee aroma. There are also some resinous hoppiness lingering in the aroma. The beer has a transparent pecan color and a thin, beige, crackle-top veil. The flavor is hoppy and has more of a bite than I expected as a hefty dose of grassy and pine hops jump out right up front and builds through the finish. There really isn’t too much malitness underneath to balance this beer; it is just outright bitter! That’s not all bad, I suppose, but definitely not what I was looking for tonight. All I really get besides the bitterness is some toasted bread and a hint of toffee. It finished floral if not a bit soapy... Regardless, the alcohol is completely hidden - or at least masked - by the flavor and bitterness. This medium-bodied barleywine is very smooth and has a soft, subtle texture.
12 fluid ounce bottle (9.9% Alcohol by Volume) from bitbucket. Thanks Bob! Rating #110 for this beer... SoLan (1427), Orlando, Florida, USA

Aroma is rather muted besides a savory, beefy element- toffee, bready malt, and resinous hops. Flavor adds some melon/tropical fruit elements to the hops, lightly toasted caramel, subtle vegetation. Full/medium body, soft carbonation. cstuartj (326), Washington, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 16, 2008 12oz. bottle, 2006 vintage(?). 9,9% abv. Aroma of sweet malts and dried fruits, surprisingly subtle in effect, with notes of toffee, apricot, date and dark brown sugar, doughy yeast and perhaps some faint licorice. Clear dark red-amber color with a very fine, slight, lasting head. Flavor is comprised of a good blend of dark, toasty malt, dark berry and apple fruitiness, very light caramel sweetness and a considerable spicy bitterness. Finish is very long and lingering, drying out to a large extent and showing touches of peppery alcohol and herbal hop flavor late. Warming, gently astringent, sticky and finely effervescent on the palate, body is adequately full. Sweetens considerably as it warms.
Seems to fit this haiku I just found:

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 21, 2008 Picked up a 12-oz bottle at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington during the summer of 2007. Pours a dark semi-clear reddish amber brew with a thick off-white head that has some good retention a some sticky lacing. Aroma of sweetened caramel malt, with characters of raisin, yeast and a touch of dark pitted dried fruit. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with a sweet flavor of raisin, some yeast, light caramel malt and a touch of nutmeg. Finish is semi-sweet with a dry raisin and caramel flavor. The extra alcohol is a nice touch.
