Bottle courtesy of hopdog. Pours murky brown with a small but persistent head. Aroma of wheat and brown sugar. Taste is malt and bitterness. A little thin, but tasty.

Bottle pours opaque amber brown with a creamy light tan head that has nice retention. Aroma of dark fruit, molasses, some dough. Taste is nice, some roast malt bitterness along with hop bitterness, a substantially thick malt body, lots of dark fruit again, mostly raisin. A light amount of soy in the aroma and taste adds to the dynamic nature of the beer. I really was not expecting much from this beer, but it’s very pleasant.

Smurf2055 (399) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 13, 2012
Pours a dark copper color with minimal head and decent carbonation. Smell is spicy, kind of like a winter warmer. Red fruit smell. Taste is pretty fruity, and more hopped, but it was a pretty one-dimensional barley wine.

On tap. Pours with a clear bronze hued body with a tan head. Aromas are malty, raisins, melanoidins, caramel, dark fruit, alcohol. Flavors are of raisins, dark fruits, caramel, medium yeast presence (phenol and dark fruit esters), caramel, brandy, alcohol, decently dry. Warming, medium bubbles.

Styles (2014) - Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA - DEC 6, 2011
Courtesy of Kenb, old notes. Mahogany with ring of bubbles for head. Huge caramel and toffee up front, fruity esters in the background. Flavor much the same with plenty of c-hops still evident, enough to balance. Decent overall.

Bottle. Dark amber colored in appearance with foamy beige head. The aroma is mostly bready malts, banana, dark sugars and medicinal hops. The taste is caramel, malt and prunes upfront followed by lemon citrus, wheat and rum at the end. The body is creamy with moderate carbonation and a slightly chalky malt and booze finish. The overall flavor is closer to a strong German wheat beer than an American style Barley Wine.

12oz bottle in a snifter. Pours brown with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of cereal and slightly roasted malts with a little bit of floral/grassy hops and hints of dark fruits. The flavor is about the same with the alcohol covered up well. Smooth texture. A pretty good beer, but not the best of it’s style.

I like their brewer, but they missed on this one. There really is just very little to this beer. I found it mostly lacking in taste. The main feature would probably be bitterness, although not overwhelming at all. Some barley wines are over the top in flavor, but this beer is quite the opposite. Disappointing.

12oza bottle from Bottelworks. Pours a dark semi-clear reddish amber brew with a thick off-white head that has some good retention a some sticky lacing. Aroma of sweetened caramel malt, with characters of raisin, yeast and a touch of dark pitted dried fruit. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with sweet raisin, some yeast, light caramel malt and a touch of nutmeg. Finish is semi-sweet with dry raisin and caramel. Alcohol well concealedSolid but not outstanding.

FROTHINGSLOSH (3388) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 5, 2011
Sent to me by my wife on a trip to Portland. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a medium brown color with a small soapy beige-tan head that faded and left a touch of lacing. The aroma was bitter caramel, fruity hops, nut, cherry, spruce and fruit cake. The flavor was bitter with notes of sour caramel, spruce, vague fruity hops, coffee, toffee, whiskey, apple and fruitcake. Prominent booziness throughout. The finish was long and complex. Thick bodied. Interesting.

12 oz bottle. Clear copper with a small beige head. Aroma of dark caramel, dried cherries, alcohol and light pine resin. The flavor is sweet and malty, with some fruity esters and a mild alcohol warming. Medium to full body with a soft carbonation and a syrupy mouth feel. Not bad, especially for the price. Could probably benefit from a bit of age as well, to tone down the sweetness.
