Commercial Description:
Our flagship beer. A large percentage of black malt give this distinctive ale its dark brown/black color and that slightly roasted flavor. Magnum hops provide a backbone of bitterness and large additions of Mt. Hood hops later in the boil come right through in the finish. The result is a highly drinkable dark ale which bridges the gap between pale and porter.

Poured a clear dark brown color with a thin beige head. The malt aroma has notes of roast, chocolate, and a hint of smoke. The flavor is malty, mildly sweet, mild citrus hop, and mild cola notes. Carbonic bite. Light-medium body with a mild bitter dry finish.

Bottle: A true brown pour, clear, and medium depth. Large off-white, frothy head. Nose is mostly malt, some earthiness. Soft, wet mouthful. Taste is more malts, a light roastiness, earth tones, and a little bitterness. Very moderate in flavor intensity.

First aroma was of brown/maple sugar. There was a long lasting velvetty head after being poured. I tasted the brown sugar, some nutty flavor, and some slight cofee/mocha. The flavor was good, but there was not much going on in the palate as I usually expect a little more body from a brown ale.

12oz bottle. Opened to a lout psst and was a light gusher. Poured a deeper brown color with a huge, huge sized off white head. Aromas of toasted nuts, caramel, and I was getting burnt brown sugar. Tastes of cocoa, roast, brown sugar, and nuts. Lightly bitter finish. Thinner body.

12oz bottle via trade with kenb - thanks Ken! - Pours brown with a short tan head that stayed briefly. Aromas of caramel, toasted malts, and some nuts. Flavor is caramel, nuts, a touch of chocolate.. Flinish is lingeringly sweet and delicious..

On tap at Hop Vine Pub, Seattle. Ruby colour with thin beige head. Not sure what to make of this. Obviously strong in alcohol I thought at the time, although not crude. An old ale perhaps with sour malt aroma. Juicy. Some hop on end, bit of coffee and damson. Bit syrupy but I got the ABV of this so wrong, I thought it was around 9%

Thanks to KenB for this. Pours hazy deep brown with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma of heavy caramel malt, brown sugar, vinous fruit, hops, and bourbon. The taste is malty, with caramel, brown sugar, nuts, and a vinous fruit mid-palate that gains a bourbony finish. Unique and quaffable, with a great label.
