COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our flagship beer. A large percentage of black malt give this distinctive ale its dark brown/black color and that slightly roasted flavor. Magnum hops provide a backbone of bitterness and large additions of Mt. Hood hops later in the boil come right through in the finish. The result is a highly drinkable dark ale which bridges the gap between pale and porter.

Tap- rated from memory: (Thanks to Mike/Eyedrinkale who supplied a jockey box at my 2009 Halloween party... A very generous man!) Pours a deep brown with a ruby hue and a dense tan head of film. Has a richly malty aroma with toffeeish soft sweetness and apparent nutty crystal malt character. Rounded body/mouthfeel. Has a rich dark caramel sweetness accompanied by a very light earthy roast. As it warms and the carbonation settles down there’s a subtle fruity Northwest U.S. hop character that goes well with the malty body. Not a bad brown ale.

Bottle at Sander’s place, NYC. Pours clear brown with a creamy, off-white head. Dry toasty malt aroma with hints of dark sugar and earth. Medium sweet flavor, toast, mild caramel, some leaves, some Belgian candi. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Sweet finish, lightly dry, toasty caramel malts, candi sugar, faint earthy bitterness. Decent brew.

Had at taproom with Andy Brendan and James. Not a very good beer. Brownish pour with decent head. Nothing special about the taste. Mediocre malts.

A copper brown ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a nutty cinnamon malt with berry notes. In mouth, a smooth berry notes, a bit of strawberry notes, so-so. On tap at Humpy’s, Oct. 9 2011.

(bomber courtesy of RiversideAK, sampled 4/1/10). Brown color with amber hue. Medium off white head, which is mostly diminishing. Aroma of moderate malt sweetness and light hops. Moderate sweet caramel flavor, with moderate hoppiness. Avg duration. Very light bitter finish. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation. Spare lacing.

UPDATED: AUG 25, 2011 On draft at Colicchio & Sons, where I overpaid for a pint of this ordinary brown ale. Very malty, and my taste buds had a hard time detecting the large additions of Mount Hood hops (altho there was a touch of something that tasted like spearmint). Pretty flat too. To me it tasted mostly like two day old iced coffee with extra sugar added, and a little cola too. This stuff didn’t click with me.

On tap at Rhinoceros, Missoula. Pours mahogany with a rich beige head and a treacle aroma. There is a medium-bodied roasted malt flavor with a sweet finish.

Yum. This is nice. Smooth first, then sweet and a bit chewy. Pretty decent brew, but just a bit on the sweet side.

Pour is very dark blackish brown from draught. Mild coffee aromatics. Thin mouthfeel with some malts.
