4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 winegal (4) - Portland, Oregon, USA - DEC 13, 2004 does not count
I love the aromatics--nice and spicy. The sweet maltiness and good spice profile is great, but is quickly extinguished by the almost-too-bitter hoppy finish. You had me, then you lost me. I agree with others, though, that the high alcohol content is balanced out with the hops and malt. Overall, one of the better winter seasonals this year.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 5000 (5000) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - DEC 11, 2004
Bottle pours burnt caramel, large frothy sand colored head, fairly attractive lacing, with very light carbonation. Light hop nose, somewhat sweet, hint of malts. Forwardly smooth, sweet, some hop twang that increases just after swallowing. Damn tasty. Great body, solid mouthfeel. Finishes like a mighty fine sweeter pale ale, with a hint of roasted malts and caramel. Alcohol is a bit noticable, but tolerable. Perhaps my new local favorite Winter offering?
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 TChrome (1391) - Bedford, Texas, USA - DEC 1, 2004
Nice reddish amber color with a very well retained off white creamy head. Aroma is grapefruit with a nice toasty malt base. The aroma is greatly encouraging some serious quaffing. Super creamy mouthfeel. This one has a wonderful palate. Flavor has assertive though not overdone hop grapefruit bitterness also a bit of caramel maltiness to balance things out. The high ABV is competely hidden. This is a very nice beer from Dick’s.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JCW (1273) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 30, 2004
Bottle: Pours a dark reddish brown. Small off-white head that quickly dissapates. Sweet fruity aroma with a touch of piney bittermess. Moderately bitter flavor and I think more than moderately carbonated. Dry finish. Good Beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 IndianaRed (1799) - Boise, Idaho, USA - NOV 28, 2004
Bottle Pours a deep redish brown witha modest light tan head that leave a nice ring but only spotty lacing. Aromas are sweet and woody, not much hops and you can tell the ABV is up there a bit. Flavors are similar but witha more pronounced oak barrel taste. Medium carbonation and a nice smooth feel. Fairly strong alcohol but fairly well balanced and a nice strong winter warmer.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Sham (1845) - Seattle, Washington, USA - NOV 24, 2004
Brown ruby with a small head and no lacing. Caramel, bubblegum, toffee, sweet alcohol, and citrus hops in the aromas. Bitter hop flavors with sweet malts. Citrus and caramel. Malty, yet not really that complex. Finishes sweetly malty with a touch of alcohol.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BückDich (5466) - McCall, Idaho, USA - NOV 24, 2004
Ruby brown color, average head and carbonation. Nose of alcohol, thyme, molasses, caramel, spices & plum. Tastes citrusy & hoppy with doughy malts & a light resin estringency. Finishes sweet & creamy with a tangy bit of spice & chamomile.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - NOV 13, 2004
Poured a hazy brown with a red tinit. Aroma was muted until warmed. Fruity..apple..floral..caramel..light alochol. Flavor is sweet and slightly syrupy. Hop bitterness in the back. I don’t really taste the expected winter spices of a "winter ale". Thanks Andre’ (HeRftYDrF)
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Hab40oz (242) - Grants Pass, Oregon, USA - OCT 27, 2004
hmm, not sure what Dick’s was thinking with this Winterbrew, maybe it just needs to be aged or something, not much for aroma, looks really nice for a winter ale but the taste is very over powering. Initially very sweet then kicks you in the face with a overwhelming bitterness and salty taste, made my tongue want to jump out of my mouth.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - OCT 27, 2004
Pours a dark red with a nice silky ivory head out of the bottle. Fruity sweet malt aroma with a light floral hop backing. Taste starts with a big kick of sweet maltiness, lots of caramel, and finishes off with a big bitter finish. The bitterness was just a bit too intense in this beer and maybe needs to be aged for a few months to calm down a bit. The finish also had almost a salty taste to it, very dry.
