beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Apr 15, 2007 On tap at Concordia Ale House. An intersting concoction, i’ll start with that. While it did keep its heritage in subtle ways, toasty bready malts, lightly herbal hops, this thing really went for the ABV punch. I’m not sure what the alcohol content was, but it wasn’t hidden well, had a lot of excess alcohol taste and burn. The base beer was nice, the malt character had... well character, it didn’t taste like most american strong ales, building of that caramel malt flavor, this had a little more depth of flavor, getting earthy at times and warm and toasty at other times. The hops were strong, but not a blast of citrus, it had enough bitterness to balance, but didn’t distract from the beer. If the excess alcohol tastes could be reduced this would be exceptional.
