COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep and malty. Large quantities of specialty malts give this ale such depth of flavor. Caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and black barley are all included. Magnum hops are added during the boil to balance the substantial maltiness and Willamette hops provide a nice spicy finish. Our house yeast ferments this beautiful black beer.

A dark brown almost black stout. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and with a touch of malt bitterness. Flavor is bitter with some malty sweetness mixed in. Not a bad Imperial, but not as full bodied as I've come to expect.

A very round and popular taste for many imperials. Roasty, bitter, chocolaty, with a little alcohol in the finish. An enjoyable beer, just not a unique one.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2003 Having a second go at this a year or so later, I found this beer to be excellent actually. A wonderful honey aspect is there that wasn't before, and combined with a very full smooth chocolate/roasted barley character it takes on a butteriness that is just excellent. This beer alone has inspired me to take a second look at the brewery, maybe the signature funk was a storing issue rather than the beer itself? 3/27/03 - 3.5: Okay, so I finally found a Dick beer that I could enjoy. Not to say that all the beer from the brewery is bad, but it all seems to fall into the same signature boring malt and peculiar bitter tang funk character. Admittedly I caught a slight hint of the bitterness, but it was far less offensive than I've experienced before, being basically overwhelmed by thick espresso malt and dry grains. There was a slightly unpleasant astringent flavor throughout, but the beer was actually a success for the most part.

A little light colored for an imperial, brown pour and I can see through my glass. Off white head. Sweet aroma with a fairly light roastiness to it. Notes of caramel, chocolate, and coffee. Fairly sweet with a somewhat thin (for an imperial) mouthfeel and a pale ale's carbonation. Roasty/smokey/bitter finish that is pretty good. Lots of imperial qualities, but without the umph. However this imperial is relatively inexpensive at ~6.50/6, especially when compared to other imperials.

Black with a thin brown layer of creamy bubbles on top. Hints of chocolate in the aroma, but the robust roasted barley character leaves the impression that this will be a very dry brew. Robust, moderately dry body with balancing bitterness. A solid imperial stout--full bodied and deep, but certainly not over the top, and with a warming character--though the alcohol is nicely masked. Also, as omhper notes--it has a noticeably salty attribute that endures as the aftertaste--quite peculiar--and toward the last sip, annoying.

Re-Rate 12/23/01: Deep dark brown to black color, heavy brown chocolate head and decent lace. Nose is scented and roasted barley, start is richly sweet, the middle medium to full, creamy complex, the finish is dry, some what hop bitter, but quite quaffable, ’A Stout Lovers Stout.
