3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. version: Burnt purple body. Not quite opaque. Rich, rocky spackle of dark ashen foam. Very soft and airy aroma with notes of candied blackberry, matchstick, coffee, and plum. Lots of black malts, fudge, buttered caramel, and leafiness beneath all the airiness. Silky smooth. Feathery carbonation. Mineral, root, and light plummy smack, up front, with a hint of seared cane sugar. Wee oxidation. The subtleties elevate the delayed charred malt charge. Black malts remain chalky rather than acidic, thanks to the delicate caramel kiss. Airy sensations return to tingle the tongue and refresh the palate, which brings out the subtle dark fruit twang. Slight earthiness lingers and gives balance to the caramel and underlying charred malts. Notably dry, which continually beckons you to take another sip. Lingers with enough burnt malts, vanilla, and sugars to separate it from many weaker versions. Very delicate, yes, but there’s still plenty of multi-layers and remarkable balance between the lightly-charred malts, scorched sugars, milk chocolate, restrained hop presence, caramel, etc. etc. to keep you coming back for more. Humbly solid session Imperial.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice deep dark brownish coloured body with a large, fast-dying light brown coloured head with larger bubbles and a glow of cola colours when held up to a light. Aroma of alcohol, raisins, pit fruits, chocolate, yeast and a bit of prunes - strong, but more of a porter or sweet stout than of an imperial stout. Medium-bodied; Strong alcohol and vanilla flavours with hints of oak and coffee, but a lot of earthy and mushroomy flavours with touches of chocolate and prunes. Aftertaste is fairly one dimensional and not too pungent - malty and chocolate flavours come out the strongest with a touch of alcohol on the finish. Overall, a decent baltic porter or stout, but not cutting it for the style. That said, it’s still a drinkable beer - just don’t expect it to be quite the imperial stout that you imagine, especially at 7,5% abv. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 12-April-2013 for US$2,59 sampled at home in Washington on 01-November-2014, about a year and half after purchasing it, which perhaps mellowed it out a bit, but this one wasn’t strong anyways.

Bottle 2013-Chocolate, roast, coffee, bread, dark fruit in the aroma. Pours black with a mocha colored head. Roast, chocolate, coffee, fruit, balancing bitterness great mouthfeel @7.5% which seems pretty low for an imperial stout, but doesn’t lack in flavor

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A deep dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, nice sweet chocolate with resinous hops, licorice, molasses, a bit of funk, very nice and complex. In mouth, very sweet chocolate with vinous notes, ashes, floral hops, treacle, veering into old ale territory.
