COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep and malty. Large quantities of specialty malts give this ale such depth of flavor. Caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and black barley are all included. Magnum hops are added during the boil to balance the substantial maltiness and Willamette hops provide a nice spicy finish. Our house yeast ferments this beautiful black beer.

Strong, smoky aroma has tones of chocolate and molasses with coffee, nutty and licorice hints. It pours a dark chocolate brown with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled light tan head. Semi-sweet chocolate dominates the smoky flavor, which includes molasses, caramel and nutty hints. Texture is quite smooth and pleasing, not very fizzy but still good. Look for this one!

Re-Rate 12/23/01: Deep dark brown to black color, heavy brown chocolate head and decent lace. Nose is scented and roasted barley, start is richly sweet, the middle medium to full, creamy complex, the finish is dry, some what hop bitter, but quite quaffable, ’A Stout Lovers Stout.

12 oz bottle into snifter. This bottle reads 7.5% ABV. Pours completely black with a medium beige head that recedes slowly. Has aromas of chocolate, caramel, toffee and raisins; smells a bit like a cinnamon roll. Taste is half sweet and half bitter. Almost reminiscent of Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout. Carbonation is medium, body is full; leaves a lingering bitter finish. I am completely blown away by this. I really wasn’t expecting much. A nice surprise!

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2003 Having a second go at this a year or so later, I found this beer to be excellent actually. A wonderful honey aspect is there that wasn't before, and combined with a very full smooth chocolate/roasted barley character it takes on a butteriness that is just excellent. This beer alone has inspired me to take a second look at the brewery, maybe the signature funk was a storing issue rather than the beer itself? 3/27/03 - 3.5: Okay, so I finally found a Dick beer that I could enjoy. Not to say that all the beer from the brewery is bad, but it all seems to fall into the same signature boring malt and peculiar bitter tang funk character. Admittedly I caught a slight hint of the bitterness, but it was far less offensive than I've experienced before, being basically overwhelmed by thick espresso malt and dry grains. There was a slightly unpleasant astringent flavor throughout, but the beer was actually a success for the most part.

[1935-20090105] 12floz bottle. Dark fruity malt aroma with some apple skins and a hint of orange hops. Black body with a thick medium-lasting creamy tan head. Heavy fruity malt throughout the flavour with a roasted coffee grounds finish. Full body is thick and bitter. Very nice.

Great color and taste. Nice hops. A premium stout.

Aroma of mild but sometimes rich chocolaty goodness; standard appearance for an Impy, pretty standard flavor leaning toward woody, and medium body and finish. Try it blind next to the high-rated ones and see just how much branding is a factor in all these other biased ratings.

Good stuff. Black with weak tan head. Chocolate and coffe and fruit to the nose and the taste. Not as fiull bodied and intense as I like a stout but still quite good.

Opaque dark brown, good head formation. Rich dark fruit, malty nose, strong coffee. Creamy dark roasted chaocolate, espresso beans, mild bitterness. No dominating alcohol or bitterness, makes a pretty good imperial stout for me.

Bottle at The Stumbling Monk, Seattle. Black with ruby highlights and a nice tan head. Aroma is big and roasty, lots of malt and coffee with a slightly boozy warmth. Full mouthfeel. Flavour of coffee and chicory, with notes of bitter chocolate and smoke in the finish. Very solid Impy.
