Commercial Description:
Dark and rich, a palate-full of deep, malty flavors. A multitude of malts and hops make this beer so special. The mash includes a good helping of caramel, chocolate and black malts. We add plenty of Magnum hops to balance the malty wort and two additions of Mt. Hood hops for lots of hop flavor and great aroma. Our porter is a traditional full flavored English style porter with a dark brown, almost black color, lots of body and smooth drinkability.

Darn. I was expecting more from this. Something calling itself Lava Rock Porter should live up to the intriguing billing. Appearance was tops (very dark but not opaque; nice billowy head), but the rest was just half-assed.

Poured a dark brown with a small grey-beige head. Malty nose with hints of chocolate and caramel . Pretty light in the finish but fairly well balanced. Creamy mouth feel; quite quaffable.

12 oz. bottle - pours dark brown with slight, white head; aromas and flavors are very mild; texture is too thin

8/14/2007: Dick’s Lava Rock Porter has the aroma of semi-sweet chocolate, soft sweet fruit/berry, and some roasted malt. It is brown and looks clear while pouring. The pillowy head is light tan in color and slowly collapses to leave a lasting, mocha crown and lots of intricate lacing. The flavor is robust and roasty accompanied by some chocolate and coffee. The sharp, yet balancing bitterness comes through in the finish that is dry (compared to the flavor) and has a lingering dark, kettle-brewed tea flavor. This beer is mellow and smooth on the palate and has a medium body. This porter definitely packs some robust flavor and an aggressive bitterness that keeps the palate alive and responsive!

12 fluid ounce bottle (6.2% alcohol by volume) from bitbucket. Thanks Bob! Rating #60 for this beer...

Dark brown, dark ruby with a loose off white head. Aroma is lightly roasty, caramel, and light alcoho. taste is weird, a light hopiness, almost a hint of tartness, with watery caramel, and alcohol, fizzy.

Sampled in a blind tasting among Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, Alaskan Stout, Dick’s Lava Rock Porter, and Coors Light. Pours a dark, dark ruby with a whitish head. The nose is roasted, but not heavily so and subtle fruit comes out. Nothing really distinct, but more say, berry quality than any of the other beers sampled tonight. No discernable hops here, just cacao up front and coffee. It’s sharp in the mouth with suggestions of nuts, bittersweet chocolate. It rolls off the tongue readily and leaves hints of prunes, but mostly cacao and coffee. Pretty decent. It’s light (for a porter or stout), but enjoyable enough.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a hazy coca brown colored body and a good lacing. The mild aroma was brown malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The thin flavor contained notes of mildly vinous and brown malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

12 oz. bottle purchased in Seattle and drunk on 7/18/07 in Red Lodge, MT. Pours a deep ruby tinted brown with a smooth and creamy light tan head. Aroma of coffee, cherries, burnt sugar, and spruce. Very smooth, medium body, and light carbonation. Muted sweetness of the dark malt variety and a nice dry but not overly bitter finish.
