Something calling itself Lava Rock Porter should live up to the intriguing billing. Appearance was tops (very dark but not opaque; nice billowy head), but the rest was just half-assed.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 14, 2007 8/14/2007: Dick’s Lava Rock Porter has the aroma of semi-sweet chocolate, soft sweet fruit/berry, and some roasted malt. It is brown and looks clear while pouring. The pillowy head is light tan in color and slowly collapses to leave a lasting, mocha crown and lots of intricate lacing. The flavor is robust and roasty accompanied by some chocolate and coffee. The sharp, yet balancing bitterness comes through in the finish that is dry (compared to the flavor) and has a lingering dark, kettle-brewed tea flavor. This beer is mellow and smooth on the palate and has a medium body. This porter definitely packs some robust flavor and an aggressive bitterness that keeps the palate alive and responsive!

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 6, 2007 Sampled in a blind tasting among Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, Alaskan Stout, Dick’s Lava Rock Porter, and Coors Light. Pours a dark, dark ruby with a whitish head. The nose is roasted, but not heavily so and subtle fruit comes out. Nothing really distinct, but more say, berry quality than any of the other beers sampled tonight. No discernable hops here, just cacao up front and coffee. It’s sharp in the mouth with suggestions of nuts, bittersweet chocolate. It rolls off the tongue readily and leaves hints of prunes, but mostly cacao and coffee. Pretty decent. It’s light (for a porter or stout), but enjoyable enough. thedm (3837), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Aug 5, 2007 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a hazy coca brown colored body and a good lacing. The mild aroma was brown malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The thin flavor contained notes of mildly vinous and brown malt. An OK brew just nothing special. Pours a deep ruby tinted brown with a smooth and creamy light tan head. Aroma of coffee, cherries, burnt sugar, and spruce. Very smooth, medium body, and light carbonation. Muted sweetness of the dark malt variety and a nice dry but not overly bitter finish.
