mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Oct 9, 2007 Appears quite light for a porter with a good, loosely-bubbled head and nice lace and a dark malty aroma with notes of caramel. Flavour is that of coffee, roasty and full of toffee with a nutty hop finish. Creamy body with decent carbonation. Pleasant porter - many thanks, G! Sam10 (36), Olympia, Washington, USA Jun 10, 2006 Found this on tap at a local restuarant. Frothy off white head, dark brown color. Taste was very smokey and sweet with a touch of bitterness. I enjoyed this beer good cold can even handle it after it’s warm. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA May 3, 2005 Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing.
Body is murky dark brown.
Aroma is lightly malty (roasted grain), lightly hoppy (resin), with a note of manure.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
Everyone knows I like farmy odors in beer, but never have I found one so brutally manure-like. Horse blanket, fine. Horse poop, no thank you. It ruined the aroma for me, and I just couldn’t recover. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Mar 31, 2005 GArnet under a big, frothy tan head. Aroma was chocolate and coffee and caramel but covered by smoke. Rich and creamy, full-bodied. The flavor held hints of chocolate and coffe and such but was overpowered by the smokiness. Unpleasant. Aubrey (2773), Denver, Colorado, USA Feb 16, 2005 Oozed out of the bottle after opening. Murky, with an apple cider hue. Smooth carbonation; somewhat light bodied. Chocolate and toast in the malts. Notes of campfire and spicy yeast. Hoppy (grass and a little pine) and curiously aromatic (cow pasture). Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jan 30, 2005 Brown. Pleasantly smoky, meaty, grassy, malt accented aroma that shows hints of manure, hay, barnyard and a hint of chocolate. This beer has kept extremely well, considering it is almost 3 years old. Smoky malt flavor with hints of caramel. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 30, 2005 Malty, roasty aroma with hints of smoke. Color is a dark brown with a small head. Roasty up front with a nice smoked taste that just accellerates into your taste buds. Good finish. Medium body could use some more malt. drismyhero (815), Tacoma, Washington, USA Dec 15, 2004 Picked up a bottle at the MSM Deli in Tacoma. An old Lava Rock Porter bottle with a Smoked Porter label slapped on. Says "bottle conditioned 4-18-02." While cold the aroma is pure alchohol and smoke, enough so my girlfriend refused even to take a sip. It pours a very dark burgandy with good head retention. Flavor reflects the aroma: alcohol, smoke, and some hops for bitterness. As it warms the aroma explodes with caramel, chocolate, molasses, and deeply smoked malts. The bitterness is not all gone, and I wish it were a touch mellower (remarkable considering its age) but this beer turned out to be excellent. Something very strange about this beer is the fact that I could walk away from it for a few minutes and be greeted with that initial overpowering alchohol/smokiness, but a second whiff always yielded the wonderful caramels and chocolates beneath the smoke. With ample patience this beer should make anyone happy.
