3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, USA - DEC 17, 2005
(12 oz bottle: Dick’s Brewing Co. in Centralia, WA) A bottle from the variety pack I purchased at the brewery, of which some were past their prime or spoiled in one fashion or another, but this brown ale is still healthy and tasty. Unfortunately, I chilled the beer too low and so the beer has poured with only a thin, filmy layer of foam; my fault, probably not the beer’s. As the beer has warmed back up toward cellar temperature, the sweet chocolate character has emerged quite nicely to stand alongside the moderate roast and mildly bitter but flavorful hops, though this still remains a malt-driven beer. Hops has more presence here than in most of the brown ales I’ve tasted, but I’ve certainly tasted hoppier interpretations of brown ales along the way too. A hint of alcohol can be detected in the flavor as well as in the back of the throat. The nose projects a bit of chocolate, but it’s less sweet than in the flavor and overall, just not very aromatic. Body is medium, carbonation is light, with a dry, lingering bitterness. The color is a ruddy light brown with pretty good clarity. Generally, I’m not all that impressed with the beers from this brewery, but this offering has been rather enjoyable.

Pours clear brown with a finger of off white head. Smell is a bit fruity and nutty. Not very strong. Taste is a bit off, caramel, weird sweetness to it, bit of nut in the finish, just odd.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 cmonster (683) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 15, 2010
Bottle served in an English pint. Pours amber-brown with a creamy light tan top. Average retention, minimal lacing. The nose is fragrant with lightly roasted caramel malts and prickly hops, but its neither dense nor complex. Sweet caramel flavor. Light-medium body, thin-oily texture that coats the tongue. This is a smooth, sweet, and easy drinking.

12oz bottle pours deep clear copper with white head. The aroma has roasted malts, some caramel as well as notes of dark fruity esters mixing with chocolate, actually lots of chocolate. The taste nice fairly rich and loaded up with chocolate rimmed with notes of caramel maltiness. By midway some roasty malts join in as well as a mild background of dark fruitiness. Nice tasting beer put I think some notes pull it a bit out of style (which isn’t a big deal to me). Enjoyed it.

Draft, pours a brown body with an off white head. Caramel malts, mild roast, a bit sweet with a light caramel tone. Cereal and grain notes, a mild earthiness to finish. Average.
