Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Bottle, Aphrodite. The pour is typical for a stout, dark brown-black, nice little head (perhaps not as big as many of its peers). The aroma was tons of vanilla and tapioca with a bit of cocoa underneath, light roast, sweet smelling. The flavor was overkill vanillla and tapioca, quite a disappointment actually, given all the hype this brew gets. Maybe this is one of those classic, "It has never been the same since they started bottling it, blah, blah, blah," but this thing was way over-hyped and I’m not that excited to have finally tried it. It wouldn’t surprise me if they added sugar and vanilla extract to this batch. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and light. Sorry, DdC, normally love ya, but....

Draught at Volo, Toronto. It’s a dark, dark brown stout with a thin tan head. It has a smooth creamy mouthfeel. The aroma is full of chocolate with coffee and some green, leafy hops in the background. The flavour is wonderfully balanced with nice dark roast coffee beans, vanilla, some subtle dark cherry. The finish is long with more coffee. The vanilla compliments the stout flavours very well.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a fading brown head over a black body. Aroma of cocoa, vanilla and light roast. Taste is rich for such a low ABV, cocoa and tons upon tons of vanilla, vanilla bean and vanilla ice cream. Creamy mouthfeel. Would probably make an awesome beer float.

Bottle courtesy of blutt59. Dark brown pour. Lovely rich chocolate aroma. Inviting aroma. Taste is chocolaty but has nice flavors that extend beyond the initial appearances. Feelings of vanilla and quite tasty. Flavorful by far.

Bottled. Poured deep mahogany with a creamy cap of tan head.. set up nicely. The aroma picked up sweet and a little darker cocoa paired with rich, deep, toasted vanilla beans.. it was hard to pull any hop influence from it save for a touch of earth.. just decadent! The flavor had much more of the vanilla bean than anything else, and that really wasn’t a bad thing.. tasty cocoa was laced throughout, light chocolatey bitterness around.. finished with more fresh vanilla bean and cocoa. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation that gave a thick feel on the palate.. the vanilla was the star, and I’d drink this again without reservation.

Sampled on 9/25/2009. This stout pours an eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee and vanilla. A medium to full bodied stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee. The hops are earthy. Very well balanced. Nice vanilla flavors, nicely sweet yet not over the top. Nicely balanced. Nice semi-sweet chocolate flavors. Very nice beer without being over the top or extreme in any way, just well made and balanced. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bottle thanks to zathrus13, a beer I have dreamed of, I wanted this for so long and finally it is bottled! Pours a dark brown opaque color with a thick brown head. The aroma is very light, milky, chocolates. The flavor is rich and awesome; roasted malts, some bitter/sourness, light vanilla, a heavy dose of cocoa and roasted malts. Smooth and a rich mouthfeel. So easy to drink it’s deadly. A great stout. But why did the name change in the US?

11.5 oz bottle. Dark brown with subsiding tan froth. Nose is chocolate cake batter and dark roast tied together beautifully with fresh vanilla bean. Soft medium body with buzzy carb. Taste is lightly bitter chocolate sweetened with vanilla; a shot of espresso with lingering cocoa. Big flavor for such a low ABV. Wonderful.
