Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

bottle from Gomer’s Lee’s Summit. aroma of sweet alcohol and cocoa. brown head, mostly small but some medium bubbles that fade quickly but reappear easily when agitated. flavor is good, with cocoa and vanilla (and maybe some cola?) but the cocoa wins out. i don’t know how balanced this is, it seems like some components could be filled out more. i wish the palate were thicker but that is personal taste. it does have some creaminess that is nice. it’s a pleasant, unique beer but not worth the 5.49, in my opinion. i’ll stick with the Peche Mortel. or Choklat if i want a sweet cocoa fix.

Bottle. Pours nearly pitch black with a nice lacing and super lasting cappuccino coloured head. Aromas of chocolate, sugared coffee, vanilla and caramel. Surprisingly dry flavour with notes of cacoa powder, roasted malt, coffee, hops and licorice. Great and very tasty brew.

Pours black with no head. Chocolate, roasted malt and light vanilla in the nose. Much the same in the flavor with all influences blending smoothly together. Medium mouthfeel.

Really nice start of a solid black beer presenting a nose and sleek palate of dark malt, vanilla hops and light cocoa. Some blueberry and caramelly - roasty malt in the middle. Nice little refresher. A bit dilute but I want to experience several of these (for cheaper than 20 bucks a pint) and reserve ultimate judgment Rock on DDC!

12oz Aphrodite bottle. Pours a dark black oily color with a small tan foamy head. Head receedes to a small tiny ring around the glass. Nose smells syrupy and vanilla with some creamy milk chocolate notes. Palate is full and oily and also fluffy with a bitter tongue lash in the swallow. Flavors of vanilla and chocolate, hop bitterness, and some chalky malty notes.

Bottle shared by ygtbsm94 on 7/26/09: Pours an oily opaque black with a creamy spotty-lacing beige head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and rich milk chocolate with a touch of licorice and cocoa powder. Body starts with good fullness and rich dark chocolate and cocoa flavor with a drier slightly more bitter finish. A well-balanced and enjoyable chocolate stout with good complexity.
