Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Pours black with a little tan head to it. Smell is of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. Has a taste of coffee chocolate but with a burnt after taste I can’t get over. Would be a great stout if it weren’t for the burnt after taste

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with absolutely no hint of light colored edges even when held to a light source. Three finger frothy dark tan/coffee colored head that has excellent retention, very slowly fading into a lasting cap that coats the glass with lacing on it’s way down. Sweet chocolate malt aroma with a nice bit of roasted coffee and espresso bean as well as some vanilla bean, burnt toast and subtle hops. The deep rich coffee aroma is pretty amazing with the perfect amount of chocolate. Thick medium body with the perfect balance of smooth silky chocolate maltiness, roasted coffee, burnt toast, subtle hops and bitter dark chocolate. This beer is very well balanced and complex with the sweet notes from the chocolate and vanilla bean perfectly balancing out the roasted coffee/espresso bean and burnt toast flavors. Slight alcohol warmth but otherwise the ABV is very well masked. None of these flavors overpower the other, instead they all bounce off of each other and I’m picking up something different on each sip. This is one of the most well-balanced beers I’ve ever had. I want to slowly drink it and contemplate each sip but I find myself drinking it pretty quickly. Highly recommended!

Bottle as Aphrodite; pity they didn’t keep the original name but I’m sure our insane & puritanical laws had something to do with that. Heavily carbonated body with a massive head that faded quickly. A huge aroma on this baby! Dark roasted malts accompanied by cocoa and coffee with the faintest wisps of vanilla. This is refreshing - a body markedly different from the aroma yet still delicious! A slightly vegetal vanilla flavor swims to the forefront and lingers while the roasted malts and cocoa vie for second place. As the vanilla fades, only a dry intermingling of cocoa and dark malts remain.

Opaque black color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, some coffee, vanilla bean, and lightly smoked wood. Taste of milk chocolate, some roast, smoke, vanilla, sweeter toffee, chocolate milk, and a semi sweet finish. Nice to finally have the finished product after having a fermenter sample over 4 years ago.

Thanks to MReusch for the bottle. Thick black pour with a thin dark tan head. Huge coffee, vanilla and bourbon aroma. Perfectly balanced body, smooth roasted grains, coffee, vanilla and bourbon. An amazing beer that is complex, yet balanced and the low abv makes this a treat to drink. Wonderful.

Black color with a whispy head. Light cocoa and a little roast aroma. Flavors of oatmeal and a lightly bitter roasted malt. Some vanilla and chocolate. Fairly light bodied. Much more subdued than I thought, even on the long ride up to room temp.

Nice pitch black with a small brown head. Aroma is very sweet of vanilla and cocoa, light roasted and somewhat acidic malt but mostly just sweet. Flavour is better than what the nose promises with lots of thick malt, well integrated cocoa, vanilla, caramell candy and coffe. The body is creamy and rich which makes the beer a pure joy to drink. Perfect dessert beer with cheese as its not too heavy yet still packs lots of flavour.
