Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Appearance: Pitch black, small but thick brown head. Aroma: Super chocolate, coffee, chocolate again, vanilla and just mouthwatering. Flavour: Cold ’hot’ chocolate, mocha, bitter coffee, peat, hops with a lovely creamy mouth-feel, this is just superb.

Bottle, courtesy Gillard. Pours black with a white head and spotty lacing. Nose is big on chocolate and vanilla. Some caramel and dark roast as well. Flavor is awesome, lots of chocolate, vanilla, some delightful spices and extremely smooth with a nice roast finish. Very velvety smooth. Love it.

Many thanks to Shawn for sharing this beer that I have sought after for so long:

Nearly opaque with a small frothy head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of bakers and milk chocolate, tobacco, leather, earthy yeast, grassy and herbal vapours, with some plum and anise tones. The taste starts twangy and roasty with a noticeable amount of chocolate and vanilla snaps character. Hints of coffee and hop bitterness towards the finish. The mouth feel is smooth and medium-bodied, a touch chalky near the end. Very good stout that I would to try on tap.

12 bottle as "Aphrodite." Black with ring and lace. Very cocoa aroma with vanilla cookies and wet earth. Hugely cocoa with vanilla and medium fruit vanilla finish. Creamy. Too much flavoring. If I want cocoa I’ll have hot cocoa. Still very nice.

Bottle in a trade with Dany, thanks. Pours a dark impy stout color with a tan rim and head. Aroma of cocoa, smoke, and some chocolate. Flavors were best at a temp. a few degrees warmed than cellar. Chocolate, dry/bakers cocoa, and vanilla. Pretty nice.

Bottle courtesy my newest acquaintance, Jen. Thanks! Dragged straight from Montreal, where I thought I’d have to be to try this. Huge, overflowing sticky stout nose, malt with roast and light ash. Light nutty swath. Pitch pour with a dark brown soapy head. Tastes like a really good dry stout, bone dry with comforting roast and ash, nothing brusque or rude, with light wood and nuts. Touch of coffee and slightly more sticky chocolate, aftertaste is woody with cocoa nibs and a little burn, slight fruit but vanilla seems to be hidden. Earthy smoke. Otherwise smooth feel on a full body with mostly hidden alcohol. Balanced, relatively mild, and pleasant. Very alluring, indeed!
