3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
341 ml bottle from Trappe a Fromage, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a large mocha head.
Aroma: Heavenly. Lots of deep rich malts – coffee and dark chocolate, some milk chocolate and caramel, some coconut and vanilla, slightly ashen, a little grape fruitiness, slight bright notes, a touch of alcohol,
Palate: Medium-ish body, fairly sparse and soft effervescence.
Flav.: Even better than the nose, it is sweeter somehow with plenty of dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, caramel, creme brulee, a touch of fruitiness and a bit of alcohol; dry with some bitterness and a fairly clean finish.
I would love a stronger, thicker, sweeter Imperial version. This is lovely.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 23, 2010 1/23/10: Nitro at Capone’s: Faint aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and cocoa. Poured black in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, brown, nitro head that was very pretty to look at. Opaque. Not sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes just like a Hershey’s chocolate bar. Flavor of chocolate, roasted malt, sugar, and cocoa. Medium body. Creamy, slightly dry texture. Nitro carbonation. Hershey’s chocolate bar finish is slightly dry. 7/4/8/4/16 = 3.9
10/13/09: 11.5oz. Bottle: Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, light vanilla, slight bourbon, caramel, and cocoa. Poured black in color with a small, light brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Opaque. Sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of roasted malts, tobacco, light wood, light chocolate, cocoa, tar, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon. Medium body. Syrupy, dry texture. Average carbonation. Roasted malt, tar, tobacco, and cocoa finish is dry. 8/4/8/4/15 = 3.9.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aphrodite bottle. Pour is perfect for a stout, pitch black and full bodied, with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is mostly bitter chocolate, but with a foundation of roasty malts and espresso, and I fancy that I can smell a bit of the vanilla as well. Flavor seems a bit thin to me at first. Just a standard stout flavor. But the flavors begin to open up for me. I can taste coffee, bitter chocolate, roasted malts and nuts. I believe the vanilla does more to mello all the flavors out than to add any flavor of its own. This is a very good and well balanced stout. I’m glad I gave it a try. Plus the label is pretty cute.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught @ Bar Volo, Toronto, ON: Pours jet black, small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, anise, vanilla, and bourbon. AMAZING flavour with all of the above, nicely roasted malts, and a more carbonation than expected. Still, it’s almost like drinking silk. Wow, great stout.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2011 Draft at SL, 6/2011 - Much more roasty, smoky/ash character that really bumped up my impression of this one and balanced things out. Hop presence seemed notable too, along with a more robust body / bite and mouthfeel. Bumping the numbers quite a bit from 2.2. Original rating: Bottle, Aphrodite. The pour is typical for a stout, dark brown-black, nice little head (perhaps not as big as many of its peers). The aroma was tons of vanilla and tapioca with a bit of cocoa underneath, light roast, sweet smelling. The flavor was overkill vanillla and tapioca, quite a disappointment actually, given all the hype this brew gets. Maybe this is one of those classic, "It has never been the same since they started bottling it, blah, blah, blah," but this thing was way over-hyped and I’m not that excited to have finally tried it. It wouldn’t surprise me if they added sugar and vanilla extract to this batch. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and light. Sorry, DdC, normally love ya, but....
