COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Nice aroma of chocolate and coffee. Black color with nice white head. Taste is rather bitter with strong notes of dark chocolate, vanilla hidden behind, not really percievable. Full-bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation. Overall, this is a nice original stout, but not my favourite though. Tastes more like a dry stout. I prefer the Mikkeller BeerGeek Breakfast by far. I precise that I tried it both for apertizer and dessert with black chocolate.

341 ml bottle from Birra+. Looks almost pitch black in the glass, impossibile to see through, with a nice, creamy and relatively persistent dark brown head. Mesmerizing smell, so rich and clean. Sweet milk chocolate, espresso coffee, mou/toffee candy, slightly toasted dark malts and vanilla beans. Surprisingly way more bitter than sweet, which is odd considering the aroma. Big coffee bitterness, very roasty and almost smokey feel as well, quite smooth with no alchool presence at all. Vanilla and licorice forward aftertaste. Average carbonation, medium body, slightly oily texture. Very, very nice.

Bottle from VE. Pours a dark dark brown with a medium brown head. Aromas of vanilla, chocolate, some light maple/coffee. Taste is slightly sweet, slight acrid dark malt aftertaste. Medium body and medium light carb.

Pour is black with a small amount of fairly tight beige head. Nose is bitter dark chocolate, faint vanilla, moderate bourbon and some charred barrel notes. The wood gets a little strong in back but fairly rich malt aromas. Flavor is very similar, a fair bit of dark rich malt, bitter chocolate, light vanilla notes. Bourbon mid palate, a little nutty, charred and woody towards the back. Light roasted malts and the char carries through the finish with some bitterness. Extremely full bodied, creamy, soft, and still has a moderate amount of carb to it.

341ml Bottle from the Brewdog Online Shop (£3.50): Another Dieu du Ciel beer that I thoroughly enjoyed, it was highly drinkable from the start with a good mix of dark malts, chocolate sweetness and hints of coffee and fruits all combining very well indeed. Whilst not quite a classic it was a very good beer that I wouldn’t mind picking up again if it were a little easier to find in the UK; still it’s one well worth picking up if you get the chance.

Draft, BD ShepBush. Black, thin tan head fades to a not much. Nose of coffee, roast, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, slight prune. Tastes moderate sweet muscovado, vanilla, moderate bitter hop, coffee, roast, cocoa, slight roast acidity, dry roasty finish. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carb. Smooth, refined, delicious.

Pours an opaque black, with one finger of tan head that quickly fades to a micro-head. Light lacing. Tastes of vanilla and dark coffee. It’s sweet and syrupy but just enough bitterness to give some balance. It lays on your tongue for a fair bit after a swig. A great one

Poured a dark black with a bit of chestnut around the edge. A nice sized tan head that sustained well and left great lacing. Definitely get the vanilla and cocoa in the aroma along with a bit of sweet tobacco, roast and maybe even some dark bread. The vanilla and cocoa blend nicely together in the taste with a nice level of roasted flavor, chocolate, some char, and even a bit of earthy hop flavor. Finishes dry with a mild rounded bitterness that seems to be coming from both the roast and the hops. Mouthfeel is semi oily with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Really well put together beer that showcases the main two ingredients without having them overwhelm everything else. Nicely balanced and drinkable.

11.5 oz bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, vanilla, cream, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and vanilla/cocoa spicing; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, vanilla, dark bread, cream, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, vanilla, cream, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, balance, and robustness of dark/roasted malt and cocoa/vanilla spice flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome spiced stout style. All around great robustness, balance, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and cocoa/vanilla spice flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
