MaxxDaddy (208), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Apr 19, 2008 Nitro at Spuyten Duyvil. Pours near black with plenty of beige head. Aroma of cocoa and vanilla shockingly enough. The lacing on this beast was something else, leaving a spider-web down the entire glass. Flavor is lovely, with lots of sweet chocolate and vanilla. The taste of this greatly outperforms ST Choklat; it doesn’t feel forced at all. Palate was average and finished with chocolate and coffee. So glad I was able to try this. It’s damn good.
Statman (3), Maryland, USA does not count Jun 27, 2008 This is one of the very best beers I’ve had in almost 20 years of craft brew tasting! Had it at the Mondial de la Biere on 30 May 2008. I would categorize it as a vanilla tasting imperial stout with great mouth feel and lingering pleasant after taste. A very great beer - my choice for #1 at this festival, but then I probably only tried 150 of the 400 or more available! Imaena (175), Portland, Maine, USA Jun 25, 2008 Draught @Mondial 08’. Chocolate and vanilla with roasted malt notes. I tried a lot of stouts that day and this was better than the St. Ambroise Oatmeal but not as good as the Peche. Great mouthfeel. Rciesla (712), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle thanks to BrianK for waterbottling this for me lol. Poured a dark body with little of the nitro c02 remaining. Lots of vanilla and chocolate. A really smooth beer the whole way through. Not extreme really in anyway but dam i cant say i’ve head a better stout! Awesome coco in this beer. robinvboyer (961), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Jun 5, 2008 Well i was very hyped to try this beer. I have to admit, it did not live up to the hype. It was an excellent stout, lovely notes of vanilla, and chocolate, but they seemed a tad thin. Some smoke lingered, and added a nice dimension, but this is not even close to the Peche Mortel. Nuffield (2532), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jun 4, 2008 I went to the Montreal Beer festival on Thursday but didn’t get this beer, choosing to focusing on other things. I then went to the pub on Friday night, where I expected to try it, but they didn’t have it on tap and the server said she heard that they had sold out at the Mondial de la Biere. Oh no! But I went back to the festival the next morning when they opened, and they had gone to get another keg of it--from a new batch. I think this was a fine beer but not overwhelming, and certainly for my tastes nowhere as good as Peche Mortale. Beautiful cascade in the glass--it seemed to change colors even. Really lovely additives; as others note, Dieu du Ciel are a master of subtle and restrained brewing. The vanilla emphasized a nice nuttiness in particular, though it is quite roasted too. Smooth but not a Peche palate. (on tap at Mondial de la Biere, 2008, Montreal)
